The Fairford Branch Line - Brize Norton & Bampton

http://www.fairfordbranch.co.uk/Bampton.htm

THE FAIRFORD BRANCH LINE. BRIZE NORTON and BAMPTON. Judging by the bright ballast visible in the background, either the trackwork was exceedingly well maintained, or as often happened when branch lines were due to close, the track was reballasted! Originally called Bampton, the station was actually nearer the village of Brize Norton, using the word near in the loosest possible sense! Gerald T. Robinson. Gerald T. Robinson. Prior to its demolition in the mid 1980s, the station building underwent a partial...

The Fairford Branch Line - Witney (Goods)

http://www.fairfordbranch.co.uk/Witney_Goods.htm

THE FAIRFORD BRANCH LINE. Snow lies on the ground in this panoramic picture of Witney goods yard on 13 February 1970 as D6328 shunts a rake of 16 ton coal wagons. By this time the long siding at the back of the yard, roughly where the photographer is standing, had been removed. This view also shows the later extension to the goods shed. Stanley C. Jenkins. THE FAIRFORD BRANCH LINE. Welcome to my Fairford Branch Line website. I hope it will bring back memories for anyone that knew the former Great Western line in its heyday and give a flavour of what it was like for those too young to remember it. Running for 22 miles through the beautiful upper Thames Valley, the line was constructed in two stages by the Witney Railway Company and the East Gloucestershire Railway Company. Updated: 28 September 2015.

The Fairford Branch Line - Eynsham

http://www.fairfordbranch.co.uk/Eynsham.htm

THE FAIRFORD BRANCH LINE. Martin Loader Collection and Martin Loader. This view from the early 1960s shows the level crossing at Eynsham, looking towards Oxford. The 1944 prefabricated down platform can be seen on the right of the picture. This was acquired by the Great Western Society and moved to Didcot in the 1980s. Stanley C. Jenkins and Martin Loader. The beginning of the end for Eynsham station. On 23 February 1985, work is underway on a new road to serve an industrial estate on the station sit...

The Fairford Branch Line - Faiford

http://www.fairfordbranch.co.uk/Fairford.htm

THE FAIRFORD BRANCH LINE. A superb panoramic picture of Fairford station in 1959. 74xx 0-6-0PT 7404 waits to depart with the 06:47 to Oxford, while just visible in the background through a gap in the trees another pannier tank can be seen on shed. Given a pleasing perspective by the use of a telephoto lens, and in perfect early morning light, this is possibly one of the best colour views of the station. Colour Rail (T. B. Owen). Gerald T. Robinson. Stanley C. Jenkins. My father, brother and myself made t...

Departmental – Portwilliam

https://stuart1968.wordpress.com/departmental

Stuart Porteous – Southwest Scotland in 00 Finescale. It’s all Derek Cross’s fault…. Portwilliam – new readers start here …. Departmental stock has always (in my view) been the most interesting part of the railway, either because it was purpose built specialist kit, or because it was pensioned-off stock from an earlier era. When I joined BR in 1987 pre-nationalisation stock was so common in P.Way trains I rarely bothered to photograph it (! G&SWR Manson Passenger Brakevan. 8221;) that the first proper ra...

Stuart Porteous – Southwest Scotland in 00 Finescale. It’s all Derek Cross’s fault…. Portwilliam – new readers start here …. May 17, 2015. Real men don’t need wiring diagrams. Christmas and Easter came and went in a blur of apathy, exhaustion, lack of mojo and other ‘stuff’ getting in the way, but the trip to Galloway last month had the desired effect and maximum effort is now underway to get both Portwilliam and the garage/railway room finished. Suffice it to say that all. April 19, 2015. Well this year...

It dawned on me the other day that this website about my layout doesn’t have many photos of the … er … layout on it. 76112 of Stranraer drifts in along the clifftop with a BSK/CK set of porthole stock. Dumfries’s brand new 350 shoves a couple of shortbread vans up the hill from the harbour…. The signalbox is based on Crossmichael on the PPR...

Lambourn Valley Railway - End of the line

http://www.lambournvalleyrailway.info/end-of-the-line/end-of-the-line.htm

Lambourn Valley Railway header. THE END OF THE LINE. The Lambourn Valley Railway. The end of the l. March 1973 and the US Air Force had started moving its supplies and munitions by road, saving $100,000 a year by deciding to stop using the railway. When its contract with British Railways ran out in 1973, the line reverted to the control of BR. This meant only one thing: total closure. The LVRs days were well and truly numbered. The DMU nine-car bearing either headcode 2A or 1Z ran in October 1969. All we...

Researching some of the archive captions can be challenging at times, and very time consuming. I try to write the captions so they will not become out of date too easily, however this is inevitable for some subjects. I will try to alter any obvious ones as they occur later on. To make navigation around the site easy, the 100 most recent images (including scanned archive pictures) can be seen on the Recent Additions. This website now contains 10,702 images.
