Wednesday, August 06, 2014. Day 2: North Glacier Pass to north Twin Island Lake. After breakfast and packing up, we took off toward the low point between Banner and Davis, which is pretty obvious. There's also a well-defined use trail. It was remarkable how much smaller Thousand Island's inlet stream had gotten overnight. It went from a raging white torrent to a crystal clear stream. Grandpa gave us a ride to the trailhead from the cabin early enough in the morning that he could get us down and then get back out again before the gate opened at 7:00. Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Backpacking Day 2: To Bench Valley. The second day of our trip took us up out of the North Fork valley to Guest Lake, in a hanging valley above it. There are two ways up to Guest Lake from the river. You can either take the established trail, or you can use the old trail, which has been abandoned for many years. The old trail goes straight up the hill, and the new one requires a three mile or so dog-leg upstream on the river. We opted to try the old route. The North Fork valley.

Monday, March 10, 2014. I wanted to type out briefly what it was like to run my first marathon. You know, so I won't forget. It took about an hour and cost $14 for the two of us to make the trip. The course of the marathon ran from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica through Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Sunday, August 18, 2013. Day 5: Blackcap Basin. I wish we could have spent more than one day in Blackcap Basin. It's quite large, and there is a lot of it that we didn't have time to explore. Sunday, August 04, 2013. Day 4: Blackcap Traverse. On our fourth day, we hiked from Guest Lake to Blackcap Basin via a high traverse. Secor has a route that stays at about 10,400', but we worked our way quite a bit higher. In fact, we ended up climbing the mountain, dropping our packs maybe 500' below the summit. Friday, January 18, 2013. Movie Notes: A Day at the Races. A Day at the Races (1937). This isn't the best of the Marx Brothers. It's a bit too tame, too long, and it is tainted by the unfortunate racist climate of the era. The other sequence in the movie with real energy is the dance sequence by the barn. Tuesday, October 23, 2012. This was our introduction to the great Greta Garbo. She makes a great stone-faced government worker from the Soviet Union in this film set in Paris before the war. The movie trades on the glamour of Paris against the cold reality of the Soviet Union. In the end, though, it's only love that matters for the principals.
