Farmblog 09

Thursday, October 1, 2009. Christine and I dug the sweet potatoes yesterday. I figured a bit of background was in order. Little known fact: my grandparents grew sweet potatoes in their backyard every year while I was growing up. Each October, we'd drive down to Louisville, KY to help dig 'em up. As you may expect, much fun was had by all. Photos of our haul to follow. Monday, August 31, 2009. Ageratum, a nice filler for the 'purple and orange, purple and orange' bouquets we sell so many of. As soon as I ...

Farmblog 09: March 2009

http://farmblog-09.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Just two weeks and my entire life has changed! No that's not my illegitimate child.) I've been a farm-hand in. Knoxville, Tennessee for about. Days now and it's hard to believe I've ever done anything else. We planted 4 different heirloom varieties of broccoli on my first afternoon, and we've been racing against the impending heat/avoiding the deadly late frost ever since. Our days are beginning. Nto a pattern. I'm living in Knoxville with head farmer and old f. Ommitted to all-h...

Farmblog 09: Who wants to visit?

http://farmblog-09.blogspot.com/2009/08/who-wants-to-visit.html

Monday, August 31, 2009. Who wants to visit? I'll begin this post with a sunset bribe. Sure you'll have to sleep in a slightly musty Sportscoach unless you want to brave the roads at night, but I think the view is worth it. AND I'll cook you dinner. Continuing my devotion to baby plants. Our fall crop of spinach (above) and lettuce (below). The lettuce, pictured with basil and bulb fennel, have been so patient as we scramble to figure out where to put them. Bakers), and red Fingerlings (.

Farmblog 09: Volunteers

http://farmblog-09.blogspot.com/2009/08/volunteers.html

Sunday, August 2, 2009. Flickr has been updated! Check out the new Leapfrog Farm set here. Things really like to grow here at Leapfrog. Christine is especially fond of her volunteers, often going to great lengths to preserve them. Its worth it, though. We fill out much of our salad mix every week with "free" greens. In this image, you can see the fight for space between broccoli rabe, chard, and bronze fennel. It makes for a beautiful, varied landscape. We broke records last week. Last night. It's on...

Farmblog 09: May 2009

http://farmblog-09.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 31, 2009. The $100 head of broccoli. After almost 7 months of waiting (and after producing leaves the size of elephant ears) we've got our first broccoli flower! This is Romanesco, an Italian heirloom variety, that is known for its spirally florets. Let's just hope its delicious, too. We're hoping to start selling at the farmer's market in 2 weeks. I've been spending mornings transplanting tomato starts to sell, and we are hoping to have chard, snap peas, carrots, and, perhaps, if we're l...

Farmblog 09: Our dirty secret...

http://farmblog-09.blogspot.com/2009/08/our-dirty-secret.html

Monday, August 31, 2009. This lovely place that looks like a farm is actually an event and catering space called Farm Kitchen. Once a working farm, it now employs local farmers, like Christine, to 'keep up appearances,' while owners Hollice and Anne bring in unsuspecting wedding parties and B&B guests. They all do a lovely job! While planning our harvest around events can sometimes be hairy, the extra growing space it affords makes Leapfrog work. That are trying not to drown! And the brassicas,.

John's Farming Digest

The journal of a small farmer in the East of England, for the curious. Tuesday, May 04, 2004. Today I caught a llama rustler trying to have a go at my flock! Times were when people had dignity and respect for others' property - now that's all gone. More later, folks. Posted by John Piddleswick at 6:29 AM. Monday, May 03, 2004. Hello again, folks. An anecdote, as I promised! Destroyed, not once but twice! I couldn't believe it; they'd been here all along! But that's another story altogether. However, ...

The Waverly School Growers | A blog for and by the Sustainable Farming class

The Waverly School Growers. A blog for and by the Sustainable Farming class. Billy, Billy, Not Contrary. How does your Vegetable Bin Grow? Dog Days of Summer. You’ve Gotta Like Squash. June 8, 2010. Today, in collaboration with the elementary school, Waverly put on the first Farmer’s Market in roughly ten years! May 25, 2010. Yesterday, while cleaning out the compost bin we have not been using recently, we found, under some nasty, un-compostable weeds, a layer of moist, brown worm filled, pay-dirt! Of co...
