Modern Medicine Meets Homestead Traditions. Thursday, April 23, 2015. Homemade Chicken Pot Pie. I have made this chicken pot pie recipe twice already this fall, it is that good! For the crust I use this recipe and use 2/3 of it or bottom cuts and 1/3 for the top crust:. 1tsp ground sage ( optional). For the pie filling you can do whatever you like but I usually do:. 1 bag frozen veggies (thawed in microwave). 1 boiled chicken meat (save bones for chicken stock). 1 can cream of chicken. To prep the crust:.

Farming PharmD: Canned Apple Pie Filling

http://www.farmingpharmd.blogspot.com/2015/04/canned-apple-pie-filling.html

Modern Medicine Meets Homestead Traditions. Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Canned Apple Pie Filling. Depending on how many apple you have you can adjust this recipe. With about 8-10 pounds of apples I got about half a stock pot full of apple slices. Enough to make 3 quarts of apple pie filling. Hopefully I can make more after I get back from vacation.that is if those pesky squirrels that ate all of my pears don't get to them first. Anywho, here is the recipe that I used! 10 pounds of apples. 3 tsp lemon juice.

Farming PharmD: 3 Minute Consult: Local Honey for Allergies

http://www.farmingpharmd.blogspot.com/2015/04/3-minute-consult-local-honey-for.html

Modern Medicine Meets Homestead Traditions. Sunday, April 19, 2015. 3 Minute Consult: Local Honey for Allergies. With Spring comes hay fever, pollen allergies, sore throats and vertigo. I frequently have patients asking me to recommend OTC allergy medications. I prefer to use a nasal steroid or a fast acting antihistamine for quick relief, but recently I have been building a top bar bee hive and have been wondering at the benefits of local honey. The caveat of this idea, though, is that the honey has to ...

Backyard Farm Diary: Bread: The Easy Way

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013/03/bread-easy-way.html

Friday, March 8, 2013. Bread: The Easy Way. You need to bake bread to be a proper backyard farmer/homesteader, right? I mean, it just seems. Like something a homesteading type should do, along with keeping chickens and having a vegetable garden. So these past few months I have doing my darnedest to make a homemade loaf of bread a regular occurrence around here. It seems bread-baking is not my thing. But happily, I have. If you want to try this method, this. Is a good book to get. It is so easy! Doesn&#82...

Backyard Farm Diary: Starting From Seed

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013/02/starting-from-seed.html

Thursday, February 28, 2013. We started our first seeds indoors yesterday. We have been cooped up for nearly a week now with one or another family member fighting some nasty flu-like virus, so this was a nice little escape for us healthier ones:). I followed seed starting directions found in a recent issue of Mother Earth News. Used a pencil to punch three holes in some small paper cups, then filled them to the top with seed germinating mix. It is so nice to be gardening again:). Who's on the Farm. View ...

Backyard Farm Diary: The Meat Chicken Decision

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-meat-chicken-decision.html

Thursday, March 7, 2013. The Meat Chicken Decision. Well, after much debate. Much debate.we have decided to go ahead and try raising chickens for meat this spring. Even typing. That gives me the shivers. I am terrified. I wish I could say the husband is fully confident, but he is not. He is also terrified. I'm not sure why it's so scary. We eat chicken. Lots of chicken. I love having animals around and am always plotting ways and reasons to get more. Still, it was a hard decision to make. Oh, and inciden...

Thursday, March 28, 2013. Weekly Garden Journal Week 3. We finally have some exciting stuff going on in the garden! I have been gradually hardening off our kale and lettuce seedlings and they will get planted outside after Easter. The weather has been warming up a bit, which is SO nice! The seedlings are looking pretty good. But even more exciting, we have stuff coming up in the garden! Rhubarb in the mud! Also, we have garlic coming up! March 28, 2013 at 6:42 AM. Backyard Farm Diary: Homemade Granola

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-couple-little-projects.html

Monday, March 25, 2013. We had a sick kid on the mend this past week, which meant more at-home and inside time than usual. I am looking forward to getting back into our normal routine this week and really. Hoping the rest of us will stay healthy! With a little extra home-time I was able to fit in a couple of fun things I'd been meaning to try. Like this. I have always wanted to try this and now I don't know what took me so long! It is easy and fun to make and most of the kids actually like. Pie In the Sky.

Backyard Farm Diary: Canning, Again

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013/03/canning-again.html

Tuesday, March 26, 2013. It feels like it's been ages and ages since I've canned anything. I know pretty soon it will be summer and I will be up to my eyes in tomatoes and berries and all sorts of other lovely things, but I just couldn't wait until then. Sometimes you just need a little pick me up, you know? And maybe I am weird, but canning is a definite mood brightener around here. So, I made marmalade. This is a grapefruit, orange, lemon marmalade from the Ball Book of Home Preserving. Pie In the Sky.

Backyard Farm Diary: Egg Layer Order

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013/03/egg-layer-order.html

Wednesday, March 6, 2013. I needed a major distraction for the kids this past weekend. I think (hope! The flu is finally clearing out after a nearly two week stay. Oh, it has been a looong two weeks! So the other day I got out the chick order form from our local farm supply store and the Meyer Hatchery catalog and handed them out. I told the older three kids to decide on six new laying chicks. They were beyond ecstatic. March 13, 2013 at 3:52 PM. Thanks for sharing this on The HomeAcre Hop! Be Your Own D...

Backyard Farm Diary: April 2013

http://backyardfarmdiary.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 1, 2013. Changes and Time (Or the Lack Thereof). I really thought we were all set with our decision. To raise meat birds this year. We thought long and hard about it and debated pros and cons and discussed with the kids and all that stuff. We ordered 25 Rainbow Rangers from Meyer Hatchery. Right after I ordered, I had farmer's remorse. What the heck am I thinking? We don't have time to take care of any more animals! How much money is this all going to cost? You know, that sort of thing.
