Westcountry miscellany: July 2009
http://westcountrymiscellany.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
A collection of bits and bobs, some previously published, from England's rural underbelly. Wednesday, 8 July 2009. At last, I've been provided with a link. To an interview with my Uncle George, a modest, lovely man, who died last week. I've just come back from his funeral, which was more of a celebration of a life well lived, a celebration with lots of family and friends. Monday, 6 July 2009. With a song in his heart. My Uncle George is something of a legend in our family. Susanna's a Funniful Man. Ours ...

Westcountry miscellany: The Wild Garlic
http://westcountrymiscellany.blogspot.com/2009/08/wild-garlic.html
A collection of bits and bobs, some previously published, from England's rural underbelly. Sunday, 30 August 2009. Earlier this year, an IT engineer called Mat Follas won the UK television competition MasterChef. It is a gruelling contest in which amateur cooks battle it out in a long, drawn-out process overseen by presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace. Mr Grigg is passionate about food and an avid MasterChef. Taking shape every time we drove past. So we had feelings of trepidation before we went....

Westcountry miscellany: A tribute to Harry Patch
http://westcountrymiscellany.blogspot.com/2009/08/tribute-to-harry-patch.html
A collection of bits and bobs, some previously published, from England's rural underbelly. Thursday, 6 August 2009. A tribute to Harry Patch. As dear old Harry Patch is laid to rest. I am being encouraged to get on with editing the memoirs of my grandfather (above) another Somerset veteran of World War I. They were just ordinary chaps,. Away back in 'fourteen,. Not saints nor sinners; yet perhaps,. Just somewhere in between. From every kind of home they came,. From slum, from cottage, hall,. But they, de...

The world from my window: The wonderful Varkarola in Paleokastritsa, Corfu
http://www.maddiegrigg.com/2013/08/the-wonderful-varkarola-in.html
The world from my window. Tales from Corfu and Dorset. Lush Places, Dorset. Agios Magikades, Corfu. Monday, 5 August 2013. The wonderful Varkarola in Paleokastritsa, Corfu. It's a story I know so well. Odysseus, shipwrecked after battling with Poseidon who is angry at the hero for blinding his son, the cyclops Polyphemus, lands, naked and exhausted, on the shores of Scheria, the home of the Phaeacians. The story came alive last night, at the Varkarola at Paleokastritsa. Because Corfu, you see, is wid...

The world from my window. Tales from Corfu and Dorset. Lush Places, Dorset. Agios Magikades, Corfu. Lush Places, Dorset. Let me take you now to Lush Places, an enchanted village where the luvvies seldom venture, where the mist swirls around and around the top of Bluebell Hill like a maelstrom. Just down the road is that well-heeled, genteel little Dorset town whose name all non-locals mispronounce. They wander along the street market, picking up pieces of junk and muttering that they used to have somethi...

The world from my window. Tales from Corfu and Dorset. Lush Places, Dorset. Agios Magikades, Corfu. Sunday, 24 May 2015. As I walked out one mid-spring afternoon. Up in the churchyard, the sheep are safely grazing. We walk up the lane and the dog disappears after a pheasant. I'm left whistling, embarrassed, and she comes back ten minutes later. Through the farmyard, corrugated iron everywhere, rusting roofs caved in. Out into the open again, the farmers are hard at work in the field; two brothers doing a...

The world from my window. Tales from Corfu and Dorset. Lush Places, Dorset. Agios Magikades, Corfu. Friday, 24 July 2015. The heat is still on in Greece. In front rooms and in coffee bars, on sun loungers and all through the internet and the media, there is confusion and differences of opinion. There are so many aspects to this crisis. If I hear anyone nod sagely that the Greeks are at fault ‘because they are lazy’ I will personally insert an Olympic-sized discus up their rear end. Links to this post.
The world from my window: Let's raise a glass of ouzo to Greece
http://www.maddiegrigg.com/2015/07/lets-raise-glass-of-ouzo-to-greece.html
The world from my window. Tales from Corfu and Dorset. Lush Places, Dorset. Agios Magikades, Corfu. Saturday, 11 July 2015. Let's raise a glass of ouzo to Greece. As the future of Greece hangs on a souvlaki stick, I wonder how things will pan out. So much has been said about this crisis, nothing I say will make any difference. I don't know much about economics but my heart tells me that the Greek people have been served a pretty raw deal over the years. A Piraeus Bank initiative for the humanitarian cris...
