Felin Cochwillan is a well-preserved large estate corn mill situated on a loop of the Ogwen River, Close to Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. It retains good late 19th Century detail in its external character, and inside a virtually complete set of mill machinery, including stones and a drying kiln. In 1901 it was taken over by a Mr John Hughes who bought pulleys and shafting from Felin Coed Hywel to assist in working its 4 sets of stones.

The drying room was used to dry out the corn, barley or oats before grinding. The floor contains tiles each with small holes which allow warm air to rise through from a kiln (below right) on the floor below. Once dried the grain would be shovelled down a chute in the corner to be bagged on the floor below. Floor with tiles removed.

The wheel is an Under-shot (High Breast type). Water from the 'mill race' falls from a height above the axle onto the wheel were it is collected in wooden 'buckets'. The buckets fill with water which causes the wheel to turn. There are 36 buckets on the wheel each one consisting of three wooden parts. Over the years this wood has become rotten and is in need of replacement. This will be a long process but hopefully the wheel will turn once again in the near future.

The grain was poured into the hoppers. From the top floor above. A 'damsel'. Attached to the stone shaft would turn and jiggle the 'shoe'. Allowing the grain to fall through the eye of the top or 'runner' stone. The speed of the flow of grain could be altered by adjusting a belt which adjusted the slope of the shoe under the hopper. Only the runner stone would rotate with the bottom or ' bed' stone. The ground grain spills out from the edges of the stones into the wooden 'tun'.
