Ferndale Fiber

Tuesday, September 18, 2012. I won't post a photo of the knees here because I'm sure it would gross out some people. In business news, we had a breakdown on the card which gave Dave the opportunity to improve the computer controls on the motor. I can now change the carding speed easily and have sped up the machine to card more wool per hour. Since I can walk well, more wool is being carded! Thursday, August 11, 2011. Long time, no writing. I guess blogging is not my passion, lol. Here are the photos:.

Ferndale Fiber: Needle Felting Wool: product development, a business story

http://ferndalefiber.blogspot.com/2010/04/needle-felting-wool-product-development.html

Tuesday, April 27, 2010. Needle Felting Wool: product development, a business story. In the summer of 2009 I was looking through a packaging catalog, you know the ones with boxes and tape and packing peanuts. Anyway, I had a thought that my dyed wool would look really good in a clear plastic box and I also knew that the craft of needle felting was growing. After discussing the idea with my brilliant business partner (my husband), we decided to launch a new product- Needle Felting Wool Packs. Some of my d...

Ferndale Fiber: The story of Potluck Roving™

http://ferndalefiber.blogspot.com/2010/03/story-of-potluck-roving.html

Thursday, March 18, 2010. The story of Potluck Roving™. Eventually Brown Sheep stopped making Beast roving. I think it had something to do with a breakdown of the card and age of the card master. So they started selling the carding mill ends. Some of my first colors. Then I had to market this new product. Cold calls to spinning shops were necessary and although not fun at first, I got used to it. (This calling experience came in handy later on as I coordinated a charity auction for the Ferndale M...My Po...

Sheep in the Snow. Buddy the Sheep, eating show. Sheep love to eat snow. One of our Pygmy goats: Max. Thursday, March 18, 2010.

Ferndale Fiber: Fleece to Fabric

http://ferndalefiber.blogspot.com/2010/03/fleece-to-fabric.html

Sunday, March 7, 2010. Sorry about this post being so long, I just couldn’t help going into teacher mode. The type of wool you get from a sheep depends on the breed of sheep. I have read that there are over 190 different breeds of sheep around the world. Each breed has come from people breeding the animals to select specific characteristics, fineness or coarseness of the wool, quality of meat, mothering abilities, disease resistance, etc. One of my black sheep being sheared. The quality of the fiber is d...

Within the heart of the Pacific Northwest, in Washington state, three generations of the Wavrin family are proud to present artisan cheese crafted in the Italian tradition. This happens on our farm in Ferndale. We use only milk we produce from cows we raise, fed from the crops that we grow. Our cheeses come to life under the principles of old-world cheesemaking, with a focus always on purity and flavor. All. Handmade in a closed-loop system right where the animals live.
