Field to Feast: With an Egg on Top
http://fieldtofeast.blogspot.com/2007/07/with-egg-on-top.html
Thursday, July 12, 2007. With an Egg on Top. Sometimes you learn a new recipe. And sometimes a recipe teaches you a whole. For composing a meal. As a fish-a-tarian who rarely cooks fish, my dinners usually fall into one of the following categories: Indian curry; risotto; pasta; veggie or legume-based soup; frittata/quiche; polenta. The vegetable sauté with poached eggs on top. The inspirational dish was chakchouka. Creation that, I discovered through a little online searching, was brought by. Ingredient,...
Field to Feast: A Field Trip to Cambodia
http://fieldtofeast.blogspot.com/2008/09/field-trip-to-cambodia.html
Monday, September 01, 2008. A Field Trip to Cambodia. Serve me fresh fish. And I am a happy girl. Serve me fresh fish topped with crispy, stir-friend threads of ginger, squid sautéed with green peppercorns, banana flower salad, and coconut milk and lime smoothies, and, well, I might never leave your country. I did leave Cambodia. After one week of work, and one week of holiday. But it was hard. Trials of Khmer Rouge leaders. Are ongoing, the Cambodians I met were focused more on the future. The local mar...
Field to Feast: November 2008
http://fieldtofeast.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 18, 2008. On Saturday I made. A Ghanaian black-eyed pea fritter. Though this may seem like an unremarkable event, I was amazed. 1) Carolyn's cooking bylaw number 134 - which states that the longer than expected a dish takes to prepare, the more likely it is to be a complete disaster. Received its most serious challenge to date. 2) I discovered that dried beans do not have to cook in a pot in order to be edible. I was so taken back that the following day I bored at least two people.

Field to Feast: March 2008
http://fieldtofeast.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 09, 2008. One expression you learn quickly in Zimbabwe – right up there among “ shame. 8221; (said, while shaking one’s head, instead of “too bad”) and “ howzit. 8221; (“how are things? 8221;) – is “make a plan.” Need to adapt to a new situation or create a Plan “D”? You are making a plan. But “make a plan” is more than simply an expression; it is also a way of life. Zimbabwe is primarily a cash economy, which meant that the cash shortage in December caused havoc. It was time to make a plan.

Agrarian dreaming | Food Matters
https://bakestone.wordpress.com/2008/10/18/agrarian-dreaming
Talking about food, eating, recipes, food politics and more food. October 18, 2008 in food politics. I spent the afternoon reading Michael Pollan’s. Open Letter to the Farmer-in-Chief. And thinking hard about what I understand and do not understand about the politics of food. I am not First World. What I saw in Wales shocked me, the waste and apathy and the really tasteless food in the supermarkets. I am not sure. I went into the kitchen thinking about farmers’ markets and artisan farmers and kitch...

I cooked badly and wthout confidence. Anyhow, moving on….

Talking about food, eating, recipes, food politics and more food. Beans, an undying passion. October 22, 2008 in home cooking. I read something in. About 57% of African maize being genetically modified. If famers don’t use genetically modified maize, they need more pesticides. Between the devil and a hard place. Out here in the Overberg I can find as many varieties of beans as I need. The farm labourers eat them with meat and potatoes, simmered in a balck pot. Or with a whole sheep’s head. There are new ...

Talking about food, eating, recipes, food politics and more food. Lucking out on duck. August 17, 2008 in Uncategorized. What is a Barbary duck? In certain circles, however, the name Barbary duck refers to the dressed carcass while Muscovy duck refers to the live animal. Ruminations of a mountain girl on cooking, eating and random stuff. Have you been to Lime? It's a Mexican restaurant with four locations in Denver. They have a killer cocktail menu and some pretty good food, but I must say, I think I'm too old to eat there. I have had the (unfortunate? Ruminations of a mountain girl on cooking, eating and random stuff. Yellow summer squash and shrimp whole wheat couscous. It's very suddenly become the season of abundance. Well, perhaps not suddenly, but I very recently spent three weeks in winter in the southern hemisphere which has thrown off my internal calendar completely. I picked up a cookbook I have called 'A Passion For Vegetables' by Paul Gayler. I did have an overabundance of green beans and fresh picked cherry tomatoes (harvested from my gard...

Sunday, December 21, 2008. The Gift of Water (Christmas in a Time of Cholera). Poor, overlooked water. It is a vital for cooking pasta, rice, grains and soups, yet most recipes don't even include it in their ingredient list, instead casually mentioning the need to add water in the instructions. (. Is a notable exception.) Water is so available, so commonplace, so seemingly endless a resource. After all, what other ingredient flows directly from the kitchen tap. It was unknown when water would return.
