This Rat Sailed: Keeping Bugs at Bay
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2014/09/keeping-bugs-at-bay.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Monday, September 1, 2014. Keeping Bugs at Bay. I seem to be apologizing a lot lately for the lack of posts. When I haven't been sick, I've been busy, but it hasn't been much that is sailing related. We've been working hard on our downsizing, but it is amazing how much stuff you can collect being in one home for almost 18 years. I should have more updates in the coming weeks, so please stand by. Meanwhile, I was reading a blog post.

This Rat Sailed: Fiberglassing in the Dark
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2015/08/fiberglassing-in-dark.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Fiberglassing in the Dark. It is kind of funny. It seems most projects that my wife and I start, at some point along the way, result in performing work late at night in the dark. Be it planting trees in our old backyard, re-tiling our old bathroom, or a myriad of other projects, we end up misjudging the amount of time needed. And now we can add fiberglass layup to the list. Two more layers of resin and cl...

This Rat Sailed: Thankful for a few Freedom Chips and the Wisdom to Use Them Well
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2013/11/thankful-for-few-freedom-chips-and.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Thursday, November 28, 2013. Thankful for a few Freedom Chips and the Wisdom to Use Them Well. Actually, I hadn't planned on writing this at all. My intention was to try to catch up on some of the reading I've wanted to do but am terribly behind on. I was reading the Cost Conscious Cruiser. One of the books that was so generously gifted to me. November 28, 2013 at 5:18 PM. November 28, 2013 at 8:20 PM. December 2, 2013 at 4:34 PM.

This Rat Sailed: Taking the ASA 101 and ASA 103 Written Exams
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2012/09/taking-asa-101-and-asa-103-written-tests.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Tuesday, September 11, 2012. Taking the ASA 101 and ASA 103 Written Exams. Since we finally decided on a school that is affiliated with the American Sailing Association. For our next course, we just completed the ASA 101 (Basic Keelboat). And ASA 103 (Basic Coastal Cruising). And we were a little nervous. We did get our grades and I posted them in this entry. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). That's the plan anyway. With no sailin...

This Rat Sailed: Renaming Our Leopard
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2014/03/renaming-our-leopard.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Wednesday, March 5, 2014. I'm still catching up on the posts.but at least heading in the right direction now. While my wife and I were both together on the boat, it seemed like the best time to perform the renaming ceremony. For anyone that isn't familiar with all the superstition surrounding sailing vessels and the high seas, there is a lot. Here is a write-up on the ceremony we used:. Our first attempt at the ceremony was postpone...

Saloon Update – Sailing Free
http://www.sailing-free.co.uk/2016/10/07/saloon-update
Adventures in the Westerly Centaur 'FREE'. October 7, 2016. October 7, 2016. Toes Out The Tailgate #TOTT. We picked another superb weekend for going down to the boat to try and make some progress on the saloon insulation/headlining. We stopped in the VW at a favourite spot and watched the sun go down whilst eating dinner. When we got to the boat, I quickly went aboard, armed with yet more bungee cords to check the lines that were recently reported “frapping” in the strong breeze. 3 Replies to “Salo...

This Rat Sailed: The Boat (s/v Rover)
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/p/the-boat.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). The Boat (s/v Rover). For those that haven't read through all my ramblings, the extremely abbreviated version of the boat shopping. Story is that we looked at a LOT of different catamarans in the $100,000 to $175,000 range (we ruled out traditional mono-hull boats after this experience. A Tour of the Layout. In the aft part of the starboard hull is the separate dedicated shower stall with integrated sink. Note that the video bel...

This Rat Sailed: Inspirations and Oversights
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2013/07/inspirations-and-oversights.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Monday, July 22, 2013. I have found them to be an inspiration in our quest to throw off the dock lines of our land-based life and sail along a different path. I could have sworn I had mentioned them in a post or two (other than just my research page. But after a quick review of my past entries, I couldn't find one. So I will correct that oversight now. Why am I bringing this up now? As the crew for a Leopard 4600. Charter sailboat i...

This Rat Sailed: Bug Spray Update
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2015/08/bug-spray-update.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Tuesday, August 4, 2015. A while ago I wrote a post about homemade bug spray. Since that time I had a chance to test my original formula against noseeums. And found that it wasn't as effective as I had hoped. So, I continued playing with concentrations and ingredients and researching what others have tried or claimed would work. It has taken some time, but I think. Anyway, here are the changes I've made to the old formula. For t...

This Rat Sailed: Cruising Course Day 5 - ASA 104/114 Tests and Maneuvers
http://thisratsailed.blogspot.com/2012/11/cruising-course-day-5-asa-104114-tests.html
Leaving the rat race for a life aboard a sailboat. The Boat (s/v Rover). Wednesday, November 21, 2012. Cruising Course Day 5 - ASA 104/114 Tests and Maneuvers. Being in port, we were once again able to take advantage of marina showers. The Twin Dolphin Marina has a nice setup with a number of nice clean private bathrooms upstairs with plenty of hot water. After the shower we had eggs and bacon with potatoes for breakfast, finishing up some of the provisions. We then took our ASA 104 (bareboat chartering).
