Vine of the Knowledge | theyoungerson

https://theyoungerson.wordpress.com/2011/03/03/vine-of-the-knowledge

Vine of the Knowledge. Jonah showed so graphically how much he desired to forgive: he would rather be cast into the stormy seas than see his enemy forgiven. But then God taught Jonah a lesson with a simple vine. Jonah’s shade-vine died, and he had compassion on it, compassion enough to die. And God says to him, “You had compassion on this vine. Compassion enough to die. Should I not also have compassion on this wicked city? To forgive is to die a death. To love is to be humble. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

enlightenmath | theyoungerson

So, it was the 17th century, and the church was in a general state of schism. No one liked each other. Sound familiar? The answer to the problem, so says Réné Descartes, is a single foundation of knowledge. He shows up on the scene in the early 1600’s with a history of doing seriously good math, and decides that math is the answer not only to the problems of the church, but to the problems of the whole world. He did love his geometry. Critique of Pure Reason. But if all we can actually know is math and s...

Bad Luck Stuck | theyoungerson

https://theyoungerson.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/35

People have become much more concerned with linguistics in modern times. How is it that we communicate with each other, or, perhaps even more fundamentally, are we communicating with one another? These questions are not the bedrock of philosophy, but rather rest upon other disciplines: metaphysics (what is that which is? And epistemology (how do we know that which is? And, upon addressing these, one is finally in a place to address linguistics (how do we communicate that which we know? Address never made...

It is 1960 and the United States is sending troops to Vietnam. Khrushchev orders the construction of a wall to separate East Berlin from West. OPEC is formed in Saudi Arabia. Cassius Clay wins his first professional fight. The IRA begins its fight against the British. And, in Sri Lanka, the first ever female Prime Minister is elected. And, as the second blow of this one-two punch to the Western mind, Rudolph Bultmann’s article “Is Presuppositionless Interpretation Possible? Click to share on LinkedIn (Op...

a grain in the chaff | theyoungerson

https://theyoungerson.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/a-grain-in-the-chaff

A grain in the chaff. Consistency can be a bear: especially since life doesn’t come tagged with interpretation. We have to interpret for ourselves the significance of the world around us. And, similarly, we have to interpret the Scripture we encounter, understanding its significance as it relates to itself, to the world around us, and, of course, to us. But consistent interpretation can be a bear. For instance, how do we know that God is leading us? By what standard do we judge these experiences? Or, bet...

will chocolate? | theyoungerson

https://theyoungerson.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/will-chocolate

Being human we have an immaterial element: our soul. It is our intellect, searching for truth. It is our will, inclining toward good. Our soul, our will, by its very nature, pursues that which is good. That is the end which it seeks. But our experience tells us that man is not inherently good, so how could it be that man by nature seeks what is good? The answer is quite simple: not every good is good for us. So the good which you seek may not actually be yours. We are Hoovers rather than humans. We did n...

Throw Down | theyoungerson

https://theyoungerson.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/throw-down

God throws down with Israel. The Urban Dictionary, helpfully, uses throw down in a sentence for us so we can grasp its subtleties: “some boys were all up in our * * so we hadta. Ta represent.” Thanks, Urban Dictionary. The book of Jeremiah is all about God representin’ by fighting sin. Even the name “Jeremiah” means “Yah Throws Down.”. So, Jeremiah goes about to describe this new kind of relationship. It is between a Father God and His children. It is a loving God who draws His people to Himself&...You c...

Shalom. | theyoungerson

https://theyoungerson.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/shalom

Any account of the gospel which doesn’t answer the ‘why am I here’ question leaves the listener at a loss. It seems to me that the evangelical tradition so fears humanism that it leaves humans as a side note to the gospel. But how does this answer the question of a restored relationship with God? First of all, what is sin? Is it falling short of something? If so, of what? Is it missing the mark? If so, what mark? Is it moral perfection? Why did He create man? Well, I’m not actually suggesting that the modern equivalent of God’s OT speeches is best expressed in hipster lingo. Nor am I saying that dynamic equivalence translation is to be preferred over formal equivalence. What I am saying, however, is that God’s command to Abram in Genesis 17:1 can be expressed this way: “Abram, hang out with me and be whole! Share on Facebook (Opens in new window).
