gardening tips for Autumn

In some ways the cattle invasion of my garden, which I gloomily recounted a couple of weeks ago (see. 2102), hasn’t turned out to be all bad. There’s always a fair amount of cutting back to be done in March anyway, if I don’t want plants to look daggy through winter. Only this week I was chomping into tired looking achilleas, furry grey ballota. And swathes of a gorgeous, purple bergamot hybrid (. But thanks to the boys my abelias, oak-leaf hydrangeas and evergreen honeysuckle hedge (. Moving on from bul...

With considerable charm, keen intelligence and knowledge drawn from hard experience, Fiona Ogilvie shows that when circumstances change, real gardeners get going. Australian Garden History Journal. There are thousands of gardening books, so why write another? As most of them assume their readers live in a favourable gardening climate, I wanted to write one for people like me, battling hot summers, frosty winters and an annual rainfall that sometimes plummets below three hundred millimetres.

Colour photography wouldn’t have changed the situation much as white is easily captured on film. But digital is a different story: white and pale colours normally appear blank in the image, so garden photographers avoid them like the plague. One place where I love to see white is in shade. This is the reason many critics consider the famous White Garden at Sissinghurst to be inferior to its equally famous counterpart at Hidcote, widely regarded by many as its inspiration. And Sage-leaf cistus (. All thes...

Cobwebs in the Garden. April 10, 2016. Cream lace dominated the Chapel veranda. Fluidity in Zauberball Tropical Fish glowed in the privet hedge. Last weekend we had our CWA Kandos Gardens Fair, with the Convent gardens being open to the public. Of course, we couldn’t let the weekend go by without including some of our knitting. We used the occasion to display some of our lacework around the garden to catch the eye of visiting garden enthusiasts. Birds on Bikes made a great display with this shawl. Costa ...

August 21, 2016. Why not have a knitted sign for a wool shop? One of my Winter projects finished. Apologies for being away from the blog for a while. Winter here tends to lend itself to bunkering down – it’s cold and the gardening winds right down with bitter frosts. However it’s also a good time to drop the pace of activity and a great time to knit (as if I need an excuse! Shop samples (it’s great to show customers ideas for patterns and how the yarn looks knitted up) and some fun knitting as well.

Fiona of Fail
An account of the life, loves, triumphs and failures of Fiona of Fail, Warrior, Champion of Alcatia, as told in her own words. Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Chapter 31. Here there be dragons. Passing through small villages along the way, I earned my meals and board by hunting, thanks to what Lucas had taught me, but also by selling my services with a sword, once I procured one from a very foolish group of bandits. We ended up with ten or so dead lizards on our hands, but none of them was Mama.
