Scientific name: Eudyptes pachyrhynchus. Closely related to the Snares penguin. Somewhat incongruously, these penguins breed. During the winter in the rainforest on the south-west coast of New Zealand’s South Island and its offshore islands. It belongs to the group of penguins known as crested penguin, which are notable for their yellow or orange crests just above their eyes and because they are obligate brood reducers – meaning that they produce two eggs but typically only ever rear one chick.
