Avatar and Empire | first things first
https://firstthings1st.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/avatar-and-empire
Exploring Old Testament faith in contemporary life. Two posts in two days! I never guessed I’d have so much to say about Avatar. I started this as an update to yesterday’s post, but it turned into something entirely new. A friend pointed me to this NY Times Op-Ed. So I don’t think Brooks gets the whole picture. But he does conclude by making a great point about the “White Messiah fable,” and here’s where the Empire part comes in:. So what could Cyrus possibly have to do with Avatar? Alike Avatar did not ...
Learning to Lament | first things first
https://firstthings1st.wordpress.com/2009/10/27/learning-to-lament
Exploring Old Testament faith in contemporary life. There may come a time when my first post needs a bit more clarification, but for now I’ll leave it be. In case you are worried, I still love Jesus… very much (as my pending affair with the Mennonites may yet prove). Here are a few of the gems I jotted down:. 8220;Vulnerability is a pre-condition to doing God’s work.” This was how she opened her time with us. 8220;I can never be right.”. 8220;God is robust! Our discussion of fundamentalism arose out of D...

Exploring Old Testament faith in contemporary life. Isaiah and History (as written by the Empire). Well, Week 2 and I already failed to post. This is a recap of last week’s class…. These two events serve as the major. 8221; but more confusingly “Whose God is this? And how do we know? 8221; Hezekiah’s subsequent appeal and Yahweh’s remarkable response are answer enough. Stay tuned. I hope to post a preview tomorrow. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0. From your own site. You ar...
March | 2010 | first things first
https://firstthings1st.wordpress.com/2010/03
Exploring Old Testament faith in contemporary life. March 20, 2010. I ended my last blog post with a reference to the speech of the Assyrian king’s ambassador in Isaiah 36. The ambassador challenges Israel’s claim that Yahweh is. In order to pit Assyrian ambition against the will of Yahweh — and the former is found woefully lacking. The first is blatant: “By the strength of. Have done it, and by. Have understanding…” (v. 13). Notice the rapid repetition of the first-person pronouns! Just to drive home th...

It's about knowing Me." well, that's what i'm trying to do with all of this creativity. i'm tapping into Your image in me and embracing the identity you've given me as a little creator. [then God called me out:] "robin, it can't all be smoke and mirrors. you need genuine, explicit. Face time with Me.". And there is the missing link. With a little help from the book we're reading in small group ( wisdom distilled from the daily. 3) sleep- this gets a category of it's own because it takes up so much time, ...
new mercies rising: Where God Is Smiling
http://newmerciesrising.blogspot.com/2011/01/where-god-is-smiling.html
Where God Is Smiling. On this, the one year anniversary of my last post on this blog, I decided that it was time for a little update. I decided that I wanted this time to be productive. So I designed a little schedule for myself including exactly what I wanted my days to look like:. 7:50 Rise and Shine. 9:00 Quick Apartment Clean-up. 9:30 Music Hour (playing guitar, singing, writing, recording, learn new instruments). 10:30 Non-Fiction Reading (spiritual formation, books about art and culture). Now I cou...
new mercies rising: Revelations in Time Management, Isolation, and Extroversion
http://newmerciesrising.blogspot.com/2009/09/revelations-in-time-management.html
Revelations in Time Management, Isolation, and Extroversion. I've gotten a little of track the past couple weeks with my other blog. Not quite keeping up with my weekly deadline as well as I would like. I think for the most part, I've been handling my weekly challenge in a healthy way, not becoming too obsessed about it or too upset with myself when I'm a few days late or when my projects are not as awe-inspiring as I think they should be. I shouldn't expect my alone time to be my most productive time.

On friday night, jason and i headed down to jersey for a quick 24 trip to meet my new niece, molly grace benson. let me just say, i am so in love. she is the smallest, sweetest, most adorable little baby ever. ever. A couple pictures to solidify the point :. I[re-]learned a few things from my trip back to the Promised Land (aka south jersey):. I love my family. i desperately want to live closer to them, but in the mean time, i'm so glad that we are in weekend-trip-driving distance. Im also digging the ne...

The truest thing about you. Here's a little food for thought from sacred rhythms: arranging our lives for spiritual transformation. By ruth haley barton:. What would my life look like if i lived as if that were true? David dark, the Kingdom, and hospitality. First of all, here is a link to a david dark talking head. And now david dark: hospitality, a vital part of living out Jesus' teachings. As i'm learning more about hospitality, i'm starting to understand that it's not just about having people over an...

I've been in a slump. flatlined. stagnant. bored. waiting. bitter. indignant. and however much i hate that place of being, it's all too easy to stay there. This morning, a passage from lamentations 3 came to mind. context: the writer spends about 10 verses talking about how awful life has been, the terrible situations that God has put him in, how his bones have been broken and his teeth have been crushed and his prayers have been unheard. he is basically all but dead. verses 17-24:. So i say,. I've tried...

So when i married jason, i decided to not be whole. let me make myself perfectly clear. jason wants me to be whole. he is constantly encouraging me to be myself and do the things that i love and try new things. But jason and i are very different in a lot of ways. and usually, this means perfect compatibility. we fill in and challenge each other's weak spots. we need each other's strengths to be complete people. so usually, it's a perfect fit. and we are in deep bliss. :o). I've been hiding from songwriti...

A little bit of narnia, a little bit of me, a little bit of healing. I'm steadily making my way through the chronicles of narnia, some for the first time. And now, finally, we come to the actual, climactic point of this entry:. All of my experience with narnia thus far has led me to one very inescapable conclusion:. I want to live in narnia. I don't really have anything more profound to say than that. i want to live in narnia. But- and isn't there always a but? And that's just the issue, isn't it? Be so ...

If you want me to. The video is kinda cheesy, but it's the best i could find. if it's distracting to you, just close your eyes and listen. in fact, i would recommend just going ahead and doing that. it's a much more profound and enjoyable experience that way. new mercies rising: holy listening
http://newmerciesrising.blogspot.com/2009/09/holy-listening.html
I know i've talked about spiritual direction quite a bit on this blog. but last night, i had quite a different experience with it that i wanted to share. first, a little back story. That is a really cool way to interact. let me know when you get to being Gods holy listener. Thats the part i dont understand. I think this past year Ive been on a similar journey, trying to recognize when Im just talking to myself and looking for my own self-affirmation and when Im actually sharing myself with Him. Monday, November 15, 2010. My Weight Loss Program. I've decided a few weeks ago that it is time I lose those last few kilo's that are still hanging around from my pregnancies. I've been having a hard time getting motivated, and as a result, I would lose a pound, gain two. Lose two, gain one. Up and down.VERY frustrating. I'm almost at my first goal (and so is he! So I am starting to look around a bit to decide what to buy, and where to get it. It has been fun! And I haven't even bought anything yet!
