ASCLME Research Cruises: August 2008

Sunday, 31 August 2008. A few posts ago, I mentioned that I would let you know about what had been keeping us all so busy. The start of trawling meant lots and lots of fish (and other creatures) winding up on our decks, which needed to be identified to the lowest possible taxon (preferably to species). Can take over an hour to get to a point where you're happy that you've done a reasonable job of identifying it accurately. The fish lab looking unusually tidy (just after we cleaned it on Saturday). Some f...

It is widely recognized that not only is the biotic diversity on planet Earth currently undergoing a mass extinction, but that the true extent of the extinction is unknown. Marine habitats are no exception to this. Although prominent marker taxa such as endangered vertebrates are well studied, most taxa remain to be discovered. It is estimated that there are. 26 000 described species, is estimated to be in the low millions, whereas only.

However, factors such as freshness, method of preservation, and age of the preserved specimen all have an impact on the overall success of obtaining a DNA sequence. These factors may influence i) the integrity of DNA within the specimen, as well as ii) the method of extraction. The amplification of target DNA is an important stage in current sequencing methods....
