Tuesday, December 11, 2007. The Annunciation shows the archangel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary in the enclosed courtyard of a florentine villa. The angel holds a Madonna lily, a symbol of Mary's virginity and the city of Florence. The wings of Gabriel are quite realistic, and some say that Leonardo copied them from a bird in flight. Looking closely at the work, the viewer can see evidence of the scalpel marks on all the figures, and note that figures in the foreground are still attached by pieces of marble to the background that should have been removed. In the painting, which is quite large, Venus emerges from the sea on a shell, blown towards shore by the Zephyrs, who were symbols of spiritual passions. She is joined on the shore by one of the Horae, goddesses of the seasons, who hands her a flowered cloak.
