Desolation Florida: January 2016

Desolation Florida: February 2016
http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 28, 2016. What desolation lurks near you? The following photos were all taken within walking distance of my home. I had driven past two of these structures twice daily for nearly a good six months before the fall season thinned the woods enough for them to become visible. Look closely! Can you see the remains of the house? Meanwhile, this one sits directly behind a local shopping center:. What desolation lurks near you? Saturday, February 20, 2016. I may have uttered some words quite ina...
Desolation Florida: Dowling Park
http://www.desolationflorida.com/2017/01/dowling-park.html
Saturday, January 7, 2017. You’ll be over the Suwannee and into Lafayette County before you know it. However, if you look to the south while you’re crossing the Suwannee River, you’ll get a glimpse of Dowling Park’s past: an old railroad trestle, crossing the Suwannee. Dowling Park Lumber Company, early 1900s [ source. In addition to serving as the community surrounding the sawmill, Thomas Dowling hoped that his Dowling Park would become a popular vacation resort area. As such, in the early 1900s, he...
Desolation Florida: June 2016
http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 19, 2016. Luraville and Peacock Springs. Luraville, FL of today is little more than a crossroads with a flashing light, roughly twenty miles southwest of Live Oak, FL in the north Florida county of Suwannee, just north of the Suwannee River. Information about Luraville is limited to say the least. Here’s what I’ve been able to piece together. Downtown Luraville, 1890s ( source. Interior of the Luraville General Store, 1890s ( source. Luraville Phosphate Mine, 1892 ( source. Who died in 2010.
Desolation Florida: The Dixie Mainline and Shired Island
http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016/10/the-dixie-mainline-and-shired-island.html
Saturday, October 29, 2016. The Dixie Mainline and Shired Island. The following three photographs are from the State of Florida Archives. They are labeled as logging from this time period in Dixie County, although whether or not they are from the Dixie Mainline is unknown. However, this should give you a good idea of how the logging operations in the area at that time looked. All three photos are from the 1920s. Much of the Dixie Mainline looks like this. The rather rocky "canoe launch" at Sanders Creek.
Desolation Florida: December 2016
http://www.desolationflorida.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 28, 2016. Lee: Little but Proud. The tiny community of Lee is located in eastern Madison County, between the towns of Madison to the west and Live Oak to the east. I’ve had a hard time finding much information about the history of the small town, but judging from the number of photographs I was able to find in the Florida Archive, it was once much bigger than it is today. Here’s what I was able to learn:. First sawmill in Lee, 1890s. JE Whitty and Son Drugstore,1918 (store built 1910).
Desolation Florida: May 2016

Thursday, May 12, 2016. Adventures Across the Border: Okefenokee Swamp from Kingfisher Landing. There's your earworm for this post! As such, I feel wholly justified in including it here on Desolation Florida. The Okefenokee Swamp currently covers roughly 700 square miles (1127km), although it would have once been larger as development near its edges, logging, and attempts to drain it have caused it to shrink in size in the modern era. I learned as a child that okefenokee. And shaking ( fenoke. The Hebard...

Sunday, November 29, 2015. Abandoned Railroad: High Springs (part 2). Before you read this post, you should definitely be sure you've read Part 1. Before scrolling any further down this post. Today - again accompanied by JOM of Gravel Cyclist. I decided to check out the line going south through downtown and southeast towards the town of Alachua. As mentioned in my previous post. Here's the faux train station, located along the empty railroad bed. This old passenger depot, built c. 1910, is all that r...
