Liza in Ethiopia: Dancing in the Dark
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015/04/dancing-in-dark.html
Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Dancing in the Dark. A gleek even in the dark. There's been almost daily power outages ever since the hot season kicked in. This is nothing new, but still something to bitch about. Second only to the sweltering Dire Dawa heat. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). This is not a food blog. Nor a volunteering blog. This is a personal blog of my experiences as a volunteer/ architect/ educator/ expat/ Filipino/ woman in Ethiopia. And are licensed under a. This sunburn aint coming off!

Liza in Ethiopia: May 2015
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 22, 2015. Green, green bokeh! The best feature of my little compound is definitely the grape vine trellis. (Especially, when I transferred to the house proper of the compound, where the trellis is.). It yielded fruits last year, but wasnt keen to harvest them, because when I tried to taste one from off the vine, it tasted rather sour. (On hindsight, it must be because I picked up an unripe piece.). But this year, the translucent green goblets hung too delectably to resist. Pinay Art. Stand.

Liza in Ethiopia: Beyond Borders: A Visit to a Somali Refugee Camp in East Ethiopia
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015/06/beyond-borders-visit-to-somali-refugee.html
Saturday, June 20, 2015. Beyond Borders: A Visit to a Somali Refugee Camp in East Ethiopia. Me at Sheder Camp, Ethiopia. June 20 is World Refugee Day, dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world. The best embodiment of the refugee crisis is perhaps the “refugee camp”, rows and rows of sad-looking UNCHR tents in dusty borders. These camps in no man’s lands best express the biggest refugee affliction – being rendered homeless. Country-les...This is the dilemma of housin...

Liza in Ethiopia: Getting the Party Started! (I.Am.Womam 2015 Art Exhibit Ingress)
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015/03/getting-party-started-iamwomam-2015-art.html
Saturday, March 21, 2015. Getting the Party Started! IAmWomam 2015 Art Exhibit Ingress). 2nd year architecture students mount their sketches on frames provided by Alliance. We'll be winging it. That's always been the idea. The exhibit ingress, we announced to participating students, would be today, Saturday, the morning and afternoon before the exhibit is set to open at 6pm later. We agreed to an 8am assembly time. I breathed a sigh of relief. Taking some time for framed-up photos while working! Subscrib...

Liza in Ethiopia: Let's eat, kamote!
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015/04/lets-eat-kamote.html
Friday, April 24, 2015. Let's eat, kamote! Too red. Means, it's a little bit overcooked. But still yummy, to me. Deep-fried caramelized sweet potato. Easily one of my favorite Filipino snack foods. Is the street food version, which brings me back to my school days where street food was king. (Still is.). Sweet potato or sukwar denich in Amharic. Bought it from a Seido streetside veggie vendor for 10 birr (for a bunch of 4). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). This is not a food blog. All photos in this b...

Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Fried tilapia with crispy fried red onions. Following the meat frenzy to mark the end of the Ethiopian Orthodox Churchs fasting season - Fasika ( aka the Ethiopian Easter) - seems like I took a bad bunch, which interestingly was not from the Fasika feast ( doro wot minamin minamin. I think, but from the fiyel. Goat meat) tibs from a local restaurant. and then some. ( minamin minamin. Saturday, April 25, 2015. This sunburn ain't coming off! Friday, April 24, 2015. Liza in Ethiopia: Strange Encounter: Dream, dream, dream
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015/06/strange-encounter-dream-dream-dream.html
Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Strange Encounter: Dream, dream, dream. As I was about to enter the DDU main gate, a guy just coming out from campus, lit up upon seeing me. Hi How are you, architect? While stretching his arm for a handshake, of course. Who is this guy? Puzzled, I answered smiling. "Heeey. Fine. How are you? You appeared in my dream the other night, you know.". Oh dear. No. I smile. I was so happy.". I hope he meant creeped out. Let's talk next time.". I nodded. "Ciao! What a strange encounter.

Liza in Ethiopia: It's that time of the month. (It's always that time of the month.)
http://lizainethiopia.blogspot.com/2015/03/its-that-time-of-month-its-always-that.html
Monday, March 23, 2015. It's that time of the month. (It's always that time of the month.). Pasta with nothing. Okay, there's garlic. And in other parts that's cool, pasta al ajillo. I'm imagining Gambas Al Ajillo Pasta, particularly Dong Juan's. But all I got is this. Pasta al ajillo. Not even cooked with olive oil. No herbs. And of course, forget about the shrimps (or prawns), there's none in Dire Dawa. But the thing really is, even if there were any, I prolly will not be able to afford it. Pinay Art&#...
