Digital Economy Bill: It's the numbers, stupid – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2010/03/digital-economy-bill-its-numbers-stupid
Digital Economy Bill: It's the numbers, stupid. Mar 28, 2010. Since my previous post on the Digital Economy Bill. Cory Doctorow has written another post. Worse, by saying that the Lib Dems are. And Don Foster has made it clear that the Lib Dems are against the web blocking provisions. So far as I can tell, the Lib Dems are doing about as much as they can. It’s not enough to stop the Bill, because there’s not enough Lib Dem MPs to do that. Follow the numbers and you can see where the b...Aug 04, 2016.

Why winning is easier than finishing second – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2009/11/why-winning-easier-finishing-second
Why winning is easier than finishing second. Nov 21, 2009. Looking back over a range of projects, some that we won and others that we lost, my most striking conclusion is that the amount of effort expended on the ones we lost, on average, substantially exceeded the effort expended on the projects that we won. Finishing second somehow takes a lot more work than finishing first. Can we train moral senses w. Aug 04, 2016. When is a problem not a pro. Aug 03, 2016. The social impact of new te. Aug 02, 2016.

A peer-to-peer future for money and markets? – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2009/12/peer-peer-future-money-and-markets
A peer-to-peer future for money and markets? Dec 09, 2009. As the recession grinds on, the question of “what to do about the banks” remains on the agenda. Today the government announced their latest maneouvre, a ‘windfall’ tax on bonuses paid to banking staff based in Britain. The BBC’s Robert Peston. Be fixed then I’ll have to hope that one day, the people with the right ideas to do so take over, but I’m not holding my breath waiting. So, what’s an ordinary person to do? Which suggests that the business...

Clouds and commodities – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2010/01/clouds-and-commodities
Jan 03, 2010. I’ve been following Sean Park’s blog. For about a year now, and have been finding his insights to be very interesting. His latest post. On Amazon Web Services, is typical in that he connects several different innovations to speculate about the future. What follows is my response to the ideas and issues he raises. Their processing happens, possibly at the cost of those who need it. And automatically provision the required computing time. A short while later, I’m browsing a 3D lands...The use...

How should software companies be run? – robknight.org.uk
https://robknight.org.uk/blog/2014/11/how-should-software-companies-be-run
How should software companies be run? Nov 08, 2014. Linked to a video of a conference talk by Erik Meijer. I’m a precious snowflake who wants to be able to agree with some bits without accepting any of the bits that I didn’t like. Since you can’t really be a precious snowflake on Twitter and live to tell the tale, I’m going to have to explain what I mean here. To me, all of this is much less interesting than the rest of the talk. Software projects and companies are frequently mismanaged. You’ll see...

Spotify fails the OiNK test – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2010/03/spotify-fails-oink-test
Spotify fails the OiNK test. Mar 21, 2010. Ldquo;OiNK”, for those who don’t know, was a Bittorrent tracker, shut down following police raids in October 2007. OiNK’s administrator was found not guilty. Of the slightly odd charges brought against him, but the site is gone and shall likely never return! Ndash;break– OiNK, however, was awesome. And it’s not just me saying that, Trent Reznor. The point is that OiNK was a great. Secondly, there are some lacunae in Spotify’s music library. Obviously, ...However...

Peer-to-peer, private and utility – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2009/12/peer-peer-private-and-utility
Peer-to-peer, private and utility. Dec 10, 2009. This is going to be a slightly more speculative post than is usual. I’d like to explore three distinct models of delivery for services and goods. This is all pretty uninformed, as I don’t really know anything about economics bar what a nasty Google Reader habit will leave you with. With that caveat in place, here goes…! It’s important to note here that I do regard this as being a general trend of private to utility to peer-to-peer, but it doesn&rsquo...

Magento shipping module update – robknight.org.uk
http://robknight.org.uk/blog/2009/11/magento-shipping-module-update
Magento shipping module update. Nov 14, 2009. Aside from working with Drupal. Another recent development at PRWD. Has been an update to our Auto-shipping Module for Magento. The new updates to the module enable multi-store functionality, so you can set different default shipping destinations for different stores (e.g. where you have a different store for different languages). This makes the module considerably more flexible. Can we train moral senses w. Aug 04, 2016. When is a problem not a pro.
