Food and Whining - An outlet for a mediocrity-weary diner.: December 2010

http://foodandwhining.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 29, 2010. Dining experiences come in many forms, from the unexpected "taco truck" at the right hour of the morning (usually well past midnight and often dangerously close to dawn) to 3 or 4-star (depending on the measurement) restaurants with name-brand everything, including the staff. Taco trucks tend to exceed our expectations because, frankly, one's expectations of quality are tempered in the wee hours. But those other places? They come with certain metrics. Is on the menu, but why.

Food and Whining - An outlet for a mediocrity-weary diner.: April 2011

http://foodandwhining.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 15, 2011. A preference for one thing over another is innate. It's also a survival instinct. If this. Watering hole is better than that. Watering hole, and you're an elephant, it's in your genes to communicate that fact. And those that don't follow you take their chances. Literally. However for humans, stating. This notion of the "hardware" affecting the "software" does, of course, relate back to food. And of youth. My parents had what I would call a "modest" kitchen. Dishes were unremar...

Food and Whining - An outlet for a mediocrity-weary diner.: Whining as a means to an end.

http://foodandwhining.blogspot.com/2010/06/whining-as-means-to-end.html

Monday, June 28, 2010. Whining as a means to an end. I've always written. In binders and notebooks, on typewriters, and on computers; the latter, for 28 years. And I've always loved food, though I fell in love long before I got to know it well enough. It was probably inevitable that I write about it. FoodAndWhining is a tongue-in-cheek way of asking a fundamental question about food, one I've asked since I had to stand on a chair to watch my father "cook"; "This is great! Is this the best there is? The s...

Food and Whining - An outlet for a mediocrity-weary diner.: August 2012

http://foodandwhining.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 5, 2012. In retrospect, maybe April 1st wasn't the best day to notify my friends that I was "giving up meat"; an announcement met with skepticism, suspicion, and maybe even a little fear. Zombies, who consume human flesh, are feared as much as humans who choose not to eat the flesh of other animals. It's hardly a day to announce anything of a serious nature, but that was exactly the point. 8221; actually made sense at the time. The second challenge is giving up all of those delicious, prim...

If you love food but want to make sure you’re also eating healthily, then this is for YOU. Dear fellow food lover do you realize your kitchen can be a far more effective ‘pharmacy’ than surgery or drugs, without all those nasty side effects? And that’s because hardly a day goes by without more scientific research being announced, proving that our everyday foods can help prevent disease or even reversing or reducing its effects. Not that this is anything new. Which is rather ironic. Because, like any busi...

WANDERLUST IN BARCELONA : TALES OF FOOD & WHIMSY

WANDERLUST IN BARCELONA : TALES OF FOOD and WHIMSY. People like chocolate, people like poetry. I'm back and I am playing the pretend game. I am pretending that a month has not gone by without me writing and that I have loads of wonderful stories bubbling up waiting to erupt on to your screen. Want to play? Inside peak of what's to come. New job cooking for a family of four. Recipe testing for the next event on October 17th. Smattering of bits and bobbles.whatever the hell that means. Slightly undercooked...

Food and Whine | I preheat a memory | I fold in old friends with new | I bake a good laugh

I preheat a memory I fold in old friends with new I bake a good laugh. Because I’m a pig…. April 18, 2008. Jusssstttt got back from dinner at Mercat. The reason was this. For desserts we went with the churros with hot chocolate on the regular menu. It was disappointing to see the least. I needed real, satisfying desserts! Our group parted ways and on my way home I couldn’t stop thinking about my last Michel Cluizel bar and how good it would taste on a piece of toast with a sprinkle of sea salt! Then got ...

The self-justifying mantra of If the universe didnt want us to eat animals, why did it make them so tasty? 8221; actually made sense at the time. Who are we to argue or question Mother Nature? FOOD & WhIskEy.

God, what a mess. Saturday, April 21, 2012. Friday, February 10, 2012. Sunday nights at Brillobox. I'm sorry I've been remiss in posting this recipe. The plate of pasta with walnut-kale pesto- actually a wildly oversimplified name for it, has mushroomed into a nice neighborhood buzz dish. It is easily the most commonly requested recipe in my Brillobox repertoire. I like it too. Feeds four as a main course. Remove from heat to a bowl, cover in plastic film, and allow to steam for twenty minutes or so.

Don't Be a Stranger. Sunday, January 1. The Convention Center is a block away. The conventions start again in October. One convention can bring 400,000 eaters to the city. David English, the chef from Cobalt, is standing in what will be. A few blocks away, Donald Link sends out chicken-liver salad,. Meat, he says. What’s in the grits? Marscapone.
