Fashionable Forties: The perfect pair of rubber boots
http://fortieswardrobe.blogspot.com/2011/04/perfect-pair-of-rubber-boots.html
The building of a 1940's wardrobe. Year One and Two. Sunday, 10 April 2011. The perfect pair of rubber boots. I’m ridiculously pleased with my new spiffy rubber boots. They are period. They are stylish. They have a 5 centimeter heel . Excuse me as I feel smug for finding something I truly believed would be impossible to find. Etiketter: autumn/winter year 1. And indeed, I had already given up the chase for the perfect rubberboot, and yet, here they are. :). 10 April 2011 at 10:06. 10 April 2011 at 12:41.
Fashionable Forties: A new beret
http://fortieswardrobe.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-new-beret.html
The building of a 1940's wardrobe. Year One and Two. Friday, 14 February 2014. The Historical Sew Fortnightly 2014. And this is the first challenge I have completed. Pink and rust wool tartan. The Three Hour Beret, a reproduction pattern from New Vintage Lady. Some black cotton poplin for interlining. How historically accurate is it? I didn’t keep track of time as I did it in snatches, but I would say around three hours. Here are a few versions made by New Vintage Lady. 14 February 2014 at 09:33. Brennan...
Fashionable Forties: Autumn/winte year one, recap and a re-start
http://fortieswardrobe.blogspot.com/2013/12/autumnwinte-year-one-recap-and-re-start.html
The building of a 1940's wardrobe. Year One and Two. Wednesday, 18 December 2013. Autumn/winte year one, recap and a re-start. It has been a while since I updated here, but I am still working on my wardrobe project and I have no plans on giving it up. 2013 has been a year of finishing off as many old projects as possible on my huge unfinished pile and I have been doing very well. And it has worked really well, so here is what I have planned for my 40's clothes. Grey wool shirtwaist dress. As you can see ...
Fashionable Forties: Grey Beret
http://fortieswardrobe.blogspot.com/2011/11/grey-beret.html
The building of a 1940's wardrobe. Year One and Two. Wednesday, 9 November 2011. My autumn/winter wardrobe has two berets listed, one grey and one black. The black are to be made in the same fabric as the black wool dress, so I plan to sew that one myself, but I have been looking for a classic grey beret in stores. I haven’t had much luck, but then Retro Chic posted about berets, 3 Ways to Wear a Beret. Read it for some nice tips and she mentioned Village Hats. Etiketter: autumn/winter year 1. 10 Novembe...
Fashionable Forties: Blue hat, red sweater
http://fortieswardrobe.blogspot.com/2011/06/blue-hat-red-sweater.html
The building of a 1940's wardrobe. Year One and Two. Sunday, 19 June 2011. Blue hat, red sweater. In the bottom of a box filled with hat supplies I inherited from my grandmother I found a blue hat. At first glance it looked a complete wreck, badly smashed up and very dusty, which is no wonder as it has probably been there for 50 years or more. On closer examination I found that it was in pretty good shape, despite it looks, so I decided to try to renovate it. Anyway, it really shaped up nicely and is in ...

Magpie Makes: The Oxford Conference of Corsetry - Sunday & Hometime
http://magpiemakes.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-oxford-conference-of-corsetry_8.html
Sunday, 8 September 2013. The Oxford Conference of Corsetry - Sunday and Hometime. As you can imagine, I was quite tired on Sunday, having gone to my room at 2am. I managed to drag myself out of bed with some help from my friend Nikki who knocked for me to make sure I didn't miss breakfast! Despite the fab food, I felt a bit ill all Sunday. Not because of anything I ate (or drank the night before! So, as you can imagine, I was getting a bit worked up. Detail of my finished corset. This is the largest sel...
Magpie Makes: 12 in 2012
http://magpiemakes.blogspot.com/2012/01/12-in-2012.html
Monday, 2 January 2012. Has had a wonderful idea: instead of resolutions for 2012, she's making SMART goals in lists of 12. 12 seems quite manageable - that's one per month - and, of course, it relates to the year (clever, eh? Being a project manager, she explains very well what SMART goals are, if you haven't heard of them before, so I'll let you check out her explanation. So, I'm thinking about my goals, my plans . What do I want to do in 2012? Skirt 1 (Simplicity 2413, paper bag waist). Apron 1 - for ...
Magpie Makes: The Great British Sewing Bee - Corsets or 'boned bodices'?
http://magpiemakes.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-great-british-sewing-bee-corsets-or.html
Monday, 23 February 2015. The Great British Sewing Bee - Corsets or 'boned bodices'? So, I've just seen a little trailer for this week's episode of The Great British Sewing Bee. And it's filled me with trepidation . This week is the one I've been waiting for - they're making corsets. Or, rather, they're making what they're calling 'boned bodices', but it looks like all the contestants are referring to them as 'corsets'. Gratuitous Patrick Grant photo. What do you think of the Sewing Bee? How to make a co...

Vintage sewing and fashion ephemera with a few other finds from my travels. Monday, March 31, 2014. Two Cases Of Good Husbandry. So when's the last time you saw an ad that quoted Virgil? Don't miss that the shirts have an "eternal air of correctness", and that the pyjamas add "a lot to the pleasure of sleeping" and "If It Shrinks We Replace"! These have a softness and lightness - and yet a great warmth - that adds a lot to the pleasures of sleeping. They may be had in both flamboyant and discreet str...

While I am unalterably opposed to corset wearing, I do not hesitate to say that the women who wear them will do well to substitute the Q.D.

It's January, 1950 in France and les Bonnes Soirees. Magazine says you need a good tailored jacket. So many choices! The building of a 1940's wardrobe. Year One and Two. Tuesday, 17 June 2014. Help creating "Perfume X". If you have read this blog for some time, then you know that I love perfume, especially vintage perfumes. I also read a number of perfume blogs and my favourite is Yesterday’s Perfume. She has started an Indiegogo campaign where you can contribute to make this happen. Most of the perks include a sample, or more, of the perfume. You can read about that here.
