Our offshore mussel farm in St Austell Bay, Cornwall, currently covers 27 acres. In B class waters, it consists of 24 double headlines supported by large grey floats spaced along the line. The lines are then anchored to the seabed. Along each headline, the ropes (droppers) that the mussels are grown on are suspended. Our mussels (mytilus edulis) are also known as the blue mussel or common mussel, and are grown offshore on suspended lines on double headlines which are then anchored to the seabed. The mussel larvae attach themselves naturally to these lines and will suspend there until fully grown for about 18 months. Being rope grown they are constantly suspended in the water and never have contact with the sea bed, so they don’t pick up sand and grit and the shells are clean from barnacles and dark in colour.
