July 25, 2009. Frame Number One - Single Speed Mountain Bike. Not too long ago, I used BikeCAD. To draw up a frame which I believe will fit me well, and based it around a 120mm fork, single speed drive train, and 26-inch wheels. Using the numbers from the technical drawing, I called up Nova Cycles. And ordered up a stack of tubing to get the job done. So, here you have a bicycle. Here are a number of photos of the process:. Top tube, with miter templates in place, laid out on the full size drawing.

May 24, 2010. Tooling and other nonsense. I have been working on building up tooling and such for the projects. So far I have acquired a 1966 Millrite mill, and a 1968 Logan Lathe. Zen and the Art of Bicycle Building. Why Does Building Performance Simulation Software Suck so Bad? Back in February, I saw Autodesk. CEO Carl Bass give a talk at Cleantech Forum San Francisco. Full video of the talk is here. Bass' commitment to cleantech was impressive. He rightly described cleantech as the biggest challenge of a generation. And he re-announced their Clean Tech Partner program. Most architects would admit they should. The problem is, Autodesk's Sustainable Design tools. To even begin to...

Zen and the Art of Bicycle Building. The Jimmy Chou Recipe. Jimmy Chou is a Chinese chef who worked for my grandparents on and off starting in the seventies. He threatened to quit periodically, and then finally retired for good (probably) last year. One day while he was cooking I asked Jimmy to teach me to cook. He gave me this recipe, which I've since done my best to get tired of, with no success. Buy 1 pound chicken, pork, or beef. Meanwhile, thinly slice. Slice the meat as thinly as possible. In 1/4 c...

Zen and the Art of Bicycle Building. I arrived in the mountain town of Boone, North Carolina, five days ago, my little red pickup Baby loaded down with everything I'd need to start a new Official Graduate Student life here. Then the kick-ass housing situation I'd been counting on fell through. Don't panic. Meet grad students, sleep on their couches, join couchsurfing.org. How much of the fabrication will we do in-house?
