PJE's Booker Blog. There’s no point me making any predictions here, because by the time anyone reads this post the result will have been announced. (I’m afraid I lack the wherewithal to keep up with technology and was unable to get online yesterday as the distant library computers I rely on were all down.) Anyway what do I know? As usual I only got round to reading half the shortlist – partly because I spent a lot of time wallowing in Iain Pears’. I couldn’t fault. The Year of the Runaways. For example, ...

September 6, 2012. Tillie Olsen: Tell Me a Riddle. Has won an amazing number of awards and held some very prestigious positions. This collection of loosely related short stories (4 in total) were all written in the 50s, and appear in the book in the order that they were written. I think writers like Jean Stafford or Daphne DuMaurier are better short story writers. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). May 20, 2013. The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye. This is a murder mystery, and the murders are quite gruesome. But Faye uses another historical fact the existence of "flash talk" to lighten up the story. I didn't know anything about this way of speaking, and her use of it was fantastic and often very funny. The excerpts from Matsell's lexicon in the front were helpful and fascinating. Links to this post. May 14, 2013. That Woman - The Life of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor by Anne Sebba. July 14, 2013. The Attack by Yasmina Khadra, now a movie. We read Khadra's book a few years ago in the book group and all of us liked it and it was a good discussion book. I see a movie based on the novel has been released in some theaters. It seems to be getting good reviews. Below are a couple articles about the movie and book:. A Politically Charged Mystery. The Effort to Stop The Attack. Deftly explores emotions after suicide bombing. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 2013 Author Websites or Bios.

April 4, 2012. The Eighty Dollar Champion. The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, the Horse That Inspired a Nation. My rating: 4 of 5 stars. This was a great book. The author knows horses and was careful to explain things in terms that non-riders would understand. Her passion for her subject came through clearly. I had never heard of Snowman or Harry de Leyer but I'm glad I saw a review of this book and was able to get a copy from my local library. Links to this post. Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden. If yo...
