Canon Fodder

Saturday, January 11, 2014. LIke A Bad Penny. I keep showing up now and again. This time with a few pics from 2013. Here's a shot of the lake side of the new house. A few weeks later. You may note that "someone," hoping for a return of semi-non-frigid fishing weather, left his boat out too long. We had to smash ice in order to get it out of the water. What a maroon! For a few weeks we enjoyed watching the little lady below, and her kin, before the cold weather sent them south. Time for a purdy flower.

Canon Fodder: June 2012

http://frankscanonfodder.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 27, 2012. More Stuff I Found In My Camera. Without further ado - a few more pics:. A Downy Woodpecker couple are regular visitors to the backyard. They are especially fond of suet. Below, the male indicates I am not fibbing. The dessicated currants below are still an important mid-winter source of food to many birds. I have no idea what the flower below is. But the photo works for me. I like the colour of these berries and the way they seem to be hanging in space. A little about my equipm...

Canon Fodder: August 2012

http://frankscanonfodder.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 24, 2012. Anyone with a large-ish window with proximity to birds has heard the occasional "thump" as a feathered body collides with glass. It's a reasonably common occurrence at Chez Baron as my yard is very bird-friendly. (Bird-friendly = lots of trees, bushes, flowers, weeds and, oh yeah, feeders.). Thankfully, most such collisions are benign, causing no hurt to birds or glass. A few months ago, I heard several muffled little thumps in the span of a few seconds. This is what I saw:.

Canon Fodder: January 2013

http://frankscanonfodder.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Buds, Blooms and Beasties. I rummaged around my hard drive today and worked on a few photos taken last spring. Thought I'd toss a few of 'em at the wall and see if any stick. Hope you enjoy. Some birds have what I call a "cold eye." They look mean. In some instances, like chickens, I think it harkens back to their dinosaur/reptilian ancestry. In others, like hawks and other raptors, it indicates focus and ferocity. The first photo is of a juvenile Night Heron. We'll take a break...

Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Before I inflict my latest batch of photo fodder on you poor folks, I want to extend a public "Thank-ee Ma'am" to Hilary. For spiffing up this blog. I get the vapours when confronted with templates and margins and that sort of thing. Luckily for me, she does not. Thanks, Hil. As mentioned previously, I'm still wading through summer shots. Here come da latest batch. All this healthy fellow below is demonstrating, is how well he's mastered the art of camoflage. What caught my eye...

Baron It All: An Open Letter To America

http://fpbaron.blogspot.com/2012/12/an-open-letter-to-america.html

Wish I'd Said It. Weeds are flowers too - once you get to know them. Friday, December 14, 2012. An Open Letter To America. Hello my Southern Brother. I bring greetings and a message. That was the greeting. This is the message:. It’s time to grow up. Growing up means looking around and seeing what is really true. What is really true is your society is fecked and all the John Waynes in the world cain’t hardly fix it. I sincerely and deeply apologize for the previous sentence. Parse it at your risk.). They ...

Wish I'd Said It. Weeds are flowers too - once you get to know them. Tuesday, August 23, 2011. On Turning 60 (#240). I reflected some and concluded there’s not gonna be too many more new decades to pause and reflect from, so maybe I’d best get started. Yes, I know what people are saying: 60 is the new 50. (42 if you had surgery.) Tell that to my knees when I’m heading uphill. Which reminds me. Why the heck is nearly everything uphill nowadays? I sat on a porch on a summer night with friends, playing guit...

Wish I'd Said It. Weeds are flowers too - once you get to know them. Monday, April 15, 2013. Fundamentalism, Maturity and A Cute Puppy (#246). As many of you know, I grew up in a staunchly Catholic home and was educated in the Catholic school system. I remember in Grade 1, we had a little primer with questions and answers about the faith. The very first q and a was:. Q - Who made you? A - God made me. They can overlook some abominable behaviour I guess - but not man-to-man or woman-to-woman loving. Now, ...

Wish I'd Said It. Weeds are flowers too - once you get to know them. Thursday, July 25, 2013. Aloha, Farewell, Thank You (#248). And I hope we'll meet again. I'm just not sure when, or if, it'll be here. Way back umpteen years ago, I used to write a few goofy emails and send them to some online friends. One day, one of those friends who shall remains nameless (of course it was Hilary) double-dog dared me to commit to a weekly, goofy email, and expand the list of recipients. And so it went. My life, our l...

Wish I'd Said It. Weeds are flowers too - once you get to know them. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Pulling A Thoreau (#241). I’ve been preoccupied the past several months - to such an extent that I’ve hardly written a word. 8220;Frank,” I hear those of you who’ve been paying some attention say, “we know you’ve been darn busy playing with your spiffy new camera and lenses. We understand. Go forth and shoot.”. That was most likely a joke. Complicating matters somewhat is the fact that I’m no longer si...

Baron It All: 1971 & RIP To A Journalism Giant (#247)

http://fpbaron.blogspot.com/2013/05/1971-rip-to-journalism-giant-247.html

Wish I'd Said It. Weeds are flowers too - once you get to know them. Wednesday, May 15, 2013. 1971 and RIP To A Journalism Giant (#247). It was a time of meeting people from around the world, visiting historic sites and generally expanding my horizons. I had two Journalistic heroes in those days. One was the great Hunter S. Thompson, the man who put gonzo into Journalism, shattering the stereotype of the blandly objective reporter. I loved the columns he wrote about his life-long love affair with Jack Ru...

Veselé Vánoce a Štastný Nový Rok 201 5. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 201 5. Long-time customers and friends,. The Franks Camera Store building has finally been sold. Yes my parents could have sold the building thirty years ago for more money and the proceeds of the sale would not have all been wasted going to pay off all the mortgage debt that they took on in those ensuing decades, but that would have been too logical, they had to live and learn. Thank you very much for being such loyal customers...

Cedar Stripping - Building a 15' Ranger Cedar Strip Canoe

Cedar Stripping - Building a 15' Ranger Cedar Strip Canoe. Sunday, March 30, 2008. Well, you can ignore the previous post, the canoe cart only made it a quarter of a mile before breaking. However it worked pretty well up until that point. This is what it was supposed to look like. No admission) I saw tons of amazing wildlife including birds, gators, huge gar, alligator gar, and more, here are a few pics. This shadowy gar was probably around 4 feet long, these torpedos can weigh up to 50 lbs! Here are som...

Hi My name is Frank. I enjoy creating all sorts of art. I'm a husband, father of two, and work full time. Below you'll find a few pieces I've worked on. I enjoy sitting in front of my PC painting away. Be it a portrait, landscape, or character. Giving an image color is a fascinating experience. As much as I love to paint on the PC, nothing beats sitting down with pencil and paper. I've begun to accept commissoned potrait work. Here you'll find a few samples I've created.
