BunyipCo: August 2014

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Friday, 22 August 2014. Coremata, including Hair Pencils, is a phenomenon associated with Lepidoptera. They are signalling structures produced by males that are seeking females. They have been proven to transmit pheromones that act as aphrodisiacs and even tranquillisers to females. Further they may act as repellents to rival males. I have documented this situation before. Here we see a relatively common tropical moth, Creatonotos. I have seen many individuals of this moth at night but have never seen it...

BunyipCo: May 2014

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 May 2014. A Tale Of Two Katydids. To a biologist, this is an interesting story showing the value of morphological, cytological and behvioural characters in solving a taxonomic anomaly. Rentz, Su and Ueshima, male. In the second volume of my Monograph of the Tettigoniidae of Australia I described 15 species of the genus Hemisaga. This and several other genera were accorded a new subfamily, the Austrosaginae. This subfamily occurs in the southern portion of Australia. Hemisaga. Note the elonga...

BunyipCo: Crickets in the Rain

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2015/05/crickets-in-rain.html

Monday, 18 May 2015. Crickets in the Rain. Late autumn rains bring out the calls of many creatures in the Queensland rainforests. Crickets are contributors to many of the loud sounds we hear after dark. Mole Crickets commence calling on dusk from burrows in the ground. Their calling is low and guttural and continues for 10-15 minutes, then it ceases. They are followed by a number of other cricket species. Among them are the impressive burrowing crickets of the genus Cephalogryllus. From the entrance to t...

BunyipCo: The Moth Family Lecithoceridae

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-moth-family-lecithoceridae.html

Saturday, 16 May 2015. The Moth Family Lecithoceridae. These are small moths. The squares in the light sheet are approximately 1mm. Here are a few examples. This is the most gaudy example of the family in the eastern tropics. It seems to be active during the day, displaying itself in the open while the other species adopt a characteristic stance and remain motionless during the day unless disturbed. BunyipCo: Another Australian "Chameleon" Grasshopper

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2015/05/another-australian-chameleon-grasshopper.html

Saturday, 16 May 2015. Another Australian "Chameleon" Grasshopper. There are not many grasshoppers that are known to change colour once they are adult. Most grasshoppers have nymphs (juvenile stages) that illustrate a range of colours and patterns but once they undergo the last moult to adulthood, that is it; they all are very similar in appearance. A notable Australian exception is the Chameleon Grasshopper, Kosciuscola tristis. Sjostedt; Acrididae; Oxyinae; Praxibulini. A newly adult female. The above ...

BunyipCo: March 2014

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Monday, 17 March 2014. My friend Buck Richardson recently took two photos of sleeping birds. This little fellow, probably a honeyeater from Kuranda, Queensland, is all puffed out its head tucked in the feathers on its back. It is perched on one foot. This bird, probably also a honeyeater, was photographed in the Daintree region, north Queensland on one foot with only a small part of a toe visible. So many birds in so many different taxa sleep in this very same way. Why? Is there a reason? Super duper Jun...

BunyipCo: Cassowary Update

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2015/04/cassowary-update.html

Sunday, 5 April 2015. As Yvonne notes in her "News From Coquette Point", it is very dry here in the Wet Tropics. The Cassowaries don't seem to mind. In the past few days the pair have been together and there has not been any aggression on the part of the female. They are probably in courting mode. Both are resplendent in breeding plumage. The nicks and scratches on the casque are the result of moving through the tangle of vines and dead branches that accompany their habitat. 5 April 2015 at 16:47. Bushla...

BunyipCo: Delicate derbids

http://bunyipco.blogspot.com/2015/04/delicate-derbids.html

Monday, 6 April 2015. Almost every trip into the bush reveals a derbid or two. Pandanus palms seem to harbour several species depending on locality and possible the specific plant host. Recent wanderings in the Emerald Falls Road, near Mareeba, Queensland uncovered a rather colourful species that has a historic taxonomic history. The area had undergone the normal annual burning regime (for reasons known only to the local council! Murray Fletcher has identified the derbids as Lydda elongata. That a more s...
