Frogsleap Farm: Tomato Breeding 101
http://frogsleapfarm.blogspot.com/2010/12/tomato-breeding-101.html
Our tomato breeding blog. Sunday, December 5, 2010. The cultivated tomato is a self-pollinated plant. With few exceptions, the stigma (female) remains within the anther cone (male) until after pollination, greatly limiting potential cross-pollination. It is estimated that 95% of the seed in tomatoes is normally the result of self-pollination. Fruit from a couple of 2010 hand crosses. 3) A breeder plans a cross between two parents that compliment each other in some way - for example an early, small fruite...
Frogsleap Farm: April 2014
http://frogsleapfarm.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Our tomato breeding blog. Sunday, April 20, 2014. Genetic Control of Fruit Color in Tomatoes. There are multiple genes that can affect fruit color in tomatoes. Although the major genes have individual effects, it is often the interaction between these major genes that produces the fruit color phenotype. What we see as fruit color is a combination of pigmentation in three separate tissue types; the epidermis, a sub-epidermal layer, and the fruit pericarp (flesh). Notes the plant is homozygous for the rece...
Frogsleap Farm: Deconstructing Flavor in Tomatoes
http://frogsleapfarm.blogspot.com/2015/04/deconstructing-flavor-in-tomatoes.html
Our tomato breeding blog. Thursday, April 9, 2015. Deconstructing Flavor in Tomatoes. I’ll start with this caveat: growing conditions can have a huge influence on taste/flavor in tomatoes. Fruit harvested early or late in the season is usually inferior in flavor compared with those harvested mid-season; high flavor is often favored with plants in light drought stress; and growing area, soil type/fertility and disease incidence/plant health can significantly effect fruit taste. Knife at the ready. In an e...
Frogsleap Farm: December 2014
http://frogsleapfarm.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Our tomato breeding blog. Saturday, December 27, 2014. Top Ten Tomatoes - 2014. These breeding lines are at various stages in development, but represent those that we voted as best of 2014. Since these plants were in four different breeding nurseries, MN, NC, PA and CA – there are at least two from each to avoid biasing by growing location. We've got a handful of F4 lines now that are hands down the best/tastiest tomatoes in our breeding nurseries. The fruit have heart shaped tendencies. Someone online s...

Tomato Addict: The Good the Bad and the Ugly of
http://tomatoaddict.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-good-bad-and-ugly-of.html
Wednesday, September 4, 2013. The Good the Bad and the Ugly of. Honestly, it was a horrible season weather wise for the tomatoes. Too cool and too much rain. Most of my new varieties got the blight. It wasn't a total bust but about 80% wipe-out. So many of the new things I was going to offer in the store will have to wait until next year. There were a few bright spots. My tomato Marmande Verte did exceptionally well! Also I finally got a shirt made for hard core tomato enthusiast! Promote Your Page Too.
