Frugal Cuisine: June 2009

http://frugalcuisine.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Cooking tips and recipes that don't break the budget. White Beans and Tomatoes. Thursday, June 25, 2009. One of the great things about Italian cooking is there are so many simple methods and combinations that result in something amazing. I made these beans twice in a week, once for company with the stuffed peppers. I didn't have any sage, which is traditional, so I used oregano. Warm two to four cloves of crushed garlic. In three tablespoons of olive oil. Diced, to the pot with 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt.

Cooking tips and recipes that don't break the budget. Sunday, January 25, 2009. The method is not new to FC, but the vegetable is (so new, I am still not sure what the stuff is.) Last Thursday I hit the farmer's market late, already hungry and looking for something to throw together for dinner. I hadn't eaten any vegetables all day and a pile of feathery leafed precut and washed greens caught my eye. Pepper: "Hey, what is this stuff? Pepper: "How do you cook it? Pepper: "How about soup? Our local supply ...

Frugal Cuisine: Never Throw Out Chicken Fat

http://frugalcuisine.blogspot.com/2009/08/never-throw-out-chicken-fat.html

Cooking tips and recipes that don't break the budget. Never Throw Out Chicken Fat. Tuesday, August 18, 2009. After making a batch of chicken stock. From a whole bird I skimmed nearly a cup of fat from the top, planning to save it and try to find a way to sub it for expensive butter. A few days later at the market I picked up a pound of shredded potatoes. At home, I melted a tablespoon of chicken fat. Into the potatoes with half a teaspoon of salt. If you are shredding your own potatoes, a benriner. 169; ...

Frugal Cuisine: White Fungus Soup

http://frugalcuisine.blogspot.com/2009/08/white-fungus-soup.html

Cooking tips and recipes that don't break the budget. Tuesday, August 04, 2009. Many servers at local restaurants these days recommend their white fungus soup (银耳汤), which I never had the habit of eating before coming to China. It has a cooling effect on the body which makes it perfect for summer, and many other health benefits. Soak a fist sized lump of white fungus. In water to cover for a few minutes; drain and rinse. Boil in another three cups of water. Labels: sweets and snacks.

My attempts to make healthy gourmet food for two on a tight budget. Saturday, September 20. Banana Raisin Oatmeal Pancakes. So today was very hot, and kind of a lazy Saturday. I've got two papers due early next week, and I spent a lot of time working on them. Today's only interesting meal ended up being breakfast - and it was super tasty! The bananas get ripe very quickly in this heat, so I wanted to use them up before they got all brown and mushy. Here's what I did:. Banana Raisin Oatmeal Pancakes:.

December 25, 2006. T'was the night before Christmas. And all through the house,. Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,. In the hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds,. While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads. And Mama in her kerchief and I in my cap,. Had just settled our brains for a long winters nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,. As I drew in my head, and was...

Laminating made cheap and easy. This great tip comes from PacificSailors. It's always nice to keep things dry on a boat, so if you don't want to buy a bulky (and expensive) laminating machine and the pricey pouches that go with it, go get some. Then simply put the paper you want to protect between two sheets of the sticky stuff. Trim it to leave a quarter to half an inch of contact paper around the edges. Best of all it takes up a lot less space and doesn't use any electricity! Cooking with the Sun.

Less cash, more filling. What to do with a chicken, part 1 (Stock). March 2, 2009 by sarah. I am kind of at a loss to figure out what to do with this blog. There are lots of cooking blogs out there, and I still see myself as a student of sorts when it comes to cooking. I also like having things made and frozen that help get dinner on the table at a reasonable hour- I don’t get home until after 6 most weeknights. I love a good roasted chicken. I have that nearly every week at my mom’s for Shabbat. Dinner,...
