Bamboo Flutes and other Natural Material Flutes

Flutes are, of course, ancient family of woodwind instruments. I generally play natural material (bamboo and other wood) transverse flutes that utilize tone holes without keys and pads. Since 2014, I've been building my own bamboo flutes and have some notion of trying dried sunflower stalks in the not too distant future. My own foray into flute building is inspired by the work of another maker whose flutes I also play, the flute guru DAS. I also build electric dulcimers.

In Nevada. 2015. See my Artist Resume / CV (pdf). I build and play mountain dulcimers. Also know as Appalachian dulcimers. And related instruments, including my one-of-a-kind Electric Gourd. As well as my DIY chromatic dulcimers. Likewise, I build and play various tone hole flutes. Mostly made of bamboo and wood. I also utilize instruments built by others: guitars, banjo, ukulele, harmonica, and synths/ generative music systems. I generally perform and record my music as Twang Darkly. Some Folks Like It.

To create music visualization, I work with various filmmaking techniques ranging from reconstructed/animated still images to camera-as-paintbrush techniques pioneered by American documentarian Clifford West (1916-2004). In 2016, I created animated film and original score for a multimedia museum installation,. The Court of King Skebal. At Meadows Museum of Art in Shreveport, LA. In 2015, I was an official Artist-in-Residence at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada.

Red Rock Canyon Artist-in-Residence. In Spring 2015, I was honored to be an official Artist-in-Residence for Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada. During the residency, I hiked the canyon with cameras and pack of bamboo flutes. Finding inspiration in the high desert landscapes. In response to that experience, I created a suite of films and music,. Is available as CD and/or download album. Its general release is under the name of my trio, Twang Darkly.
