..........Future Architect Wicky........

Wednesday, August 22, 2012. What do you get when you cross a P, a B, and a D? A few months ago, I filled you in on the first half of my spring semester studio assignment. Where we worked with letter form to create intersecting objects. As I prepare to go back to school in less than a week, I figured I should finish up my summer vacation by writing about the second half of that assignment, when we made our objects into buildings (arguably). A render of my final design, east elevation. I had mixed feelings...

..........Future Architect Wicky........: June 2012

http://www.futurearchitectwicky.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 22, 2012. For spring break in March, my boyfriend and I decided to do a 5 day road trip, somewhere within a 500 mile radius of Chicago. He literally took out a map and compass and drew a circle of 500 miles around Chicago, and we noticed that Pittsburgh was within those limits. Guess what is near Pittsburgh: Fallingwater. Our first stop was Columbus, Indiana. The following day, we travelled east, to Fallingwater, making it through the back roads and winding trails by the river in good time&#...

Friday, August 3, 2012. From there, I changed the shape to curve down, creating five different spaces with different degrees of enclosure, each for a different use. My cardboard models of the trellis system. My friend Sam designed a comically large door, that reached our maximum 5 meter height, to be an iconic entrance to the garden, and a message board to inform visitors about the garden community. What both of these designs have in common is that they are each part of a unifying theme. As we move f...

Thursday, June 30, 2011. One-on-one with Mies for my Birthday. When I arrived at the house, I asked what the deal was with the interior photography, and the guide told me that after they were done with the normal interior tour, I would be given 10 minutes inside to take all of the pictures I wanted. I asked how many other people on the tour had bought the photography permit, and the tour guide answered that I was the only one. The bedroom area - with a bed by Dirk Lohan. When I got back to the visitor's ...

Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Thomas Heatherwick has a show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London! On the first day, we were each given two letters (mine were D and A) and the assignment of learning their geometry and making the two letters merge together in a way that makes a whole new shape where the original letters are hopefully less recognizable. We then extruded them 4" and thus began the great modeling session of our semester. The first, most legible model. Or bigger, from one side to the other.

Sunday, March 25, 2012. Studying the Reliance Building. This semester at UIC, my friend Lauren and I have been doing a research project on the Reliance Building for our Tech class. The building is very different from all other buildings being studied by our peers, which include the Mercedez Benz Museum. By UN Studio, the IAC building. By Frank Gehry, and Eberswalde Library by Herzog and deMeuron (sorry I couldn't find a good website for this one, but please look it up! Lauren, finding some old info.

Piano Teacher Wicky: Jenny's (belated) birthday

http://pianoteacherwicky.blogspot.com/2011/10/jennys-belated-birthday.html

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Sunday, October 2, 2011. I've been busy busy with school these days, but I've fit in a little bit of fun here and there. I just haven't had enough time to blog about it . . . Anyway, this is a belated post about Jenny's birthday happenings. St Bride's Church in London. And since we wanted her classmates to be able to have some cake (but not break into the big one), I used the extra leftover cut-off bits ...

Piano Teacher Wicky: Falling off the Fabric Wagon

http://pianoteacherwicky.blogspot.com/2011/12/falling-off-fabric-wagon.html

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Sunday, December 11, 2011. Falling off the Fabric Wagon. It's that time of year again, when I'm either busy making Christmas gifts, baked goods, etc., or feeling guilty about NOT doing those things. So today I made a trip to The Needle Shop with my friend Brittany, where I fell off the hoarder wagon once again. Here's what I bought:. Bright Boy Elephant Fabric by Robert Kaufman. Piano Teacher Wicky: August 2011

http://pianoteacherwicky.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Friday, August 5, 2011. Piano Teacher Wicky says goodbye to the "Piano Teacher" part of her name. I know, it's not a world headline, and it's no longer breaking news, really, but I thought it would be an appropriate time to write it, and this happens to be my 200th post. Here are Piano Teacher Wicky's last (formal) words to her students:. So that hard work is always worth it. All of my students have ...

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Thursday, June 30, 2011. Something to remember my students by. Over the past few weeks, I've said goodbye to all of my students. Some of them were among my first students, when I started teaching, so it was tough to say goodbye, and interesting to think how much they had all grown in the time that I knew them. This other picture, which they gave me as a going-away gift, was taken at our final recital a f...

Piano Teacher Wicky: First (full) day of Summer Strawberry Sauce

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Friday, June 22, 2012. First (full) day of Summer Strawberry Sauce. This recipe is from a Sheila Lukins cookbook, which is one of my old standbys. 3 cups fresh ripe strawberries, rinsed, drained and cut up/quartered. 2 cups of sugar. 2 teaspoons lemon zest. 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Combine all ingredients in a 4 quart microwave safe dish mine was actually only 2 quarts and worked just fine. The dinner I...

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Saturday, February 26, 2011. I guess I don't hate that color after all . . . But then a few days ago I made a disturbing discovery, when opening the door and getting home. The color on my walls is actually pretty much the same as my new nail color. So it looks like I've come around to it after all. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. 1 1/2 quart, which the saleslady told me is perfect for "lasagne for 2." We...

Piano Teacher Wicky: Anita's Wedding Quilt

http://pianoteacherwicky.blogspot.com/2012/06/anitas-wedding-quilt.html

Occasional musings about a life of domestic engineering and teaching children to play the piano well. Tuesday, June 26, 2012. The quilt I chose to do was a chevron design. I got the pattern from a website. The fabric, instead, is a few different Marimekko fabrics, which I scored on sale for like $3 a yard at Crate and Barrel Outlet. I supplemented with some solid colors from JoAnn Fabrics. Fragile glass and hard alcohol mixed well at the wedding reception. June 26, 2012 at 10:04 PM. See what I'm pinning!
