Seeing America at 10 miles per hour. Day 3: Ohiopyle to Meyersdale, PA. Elevation change: 876 feet. Hotel – Ohiopyle: Mackenzie Guest House. Hotel – Meyersdale: Yoder’s Guest House. We sat on the front porch, drank coffee, and ate the muffins that were in the refrigerator. This was going to be the most difficult day of all. Approximately 40 miles plus an elevation change of 876 feet! The town of Confluence was a short ride away, about 10 miles, so we decided to stop there for a more hearty breakfast.

The Red Roof Inn does not come with a free breakfast, but there was a Waffle House right next door. There were at least 10 other long distance cyclists eating there as well. Seeing America at 10 miles per hour. Day 8: Shepherdstown to White’s Ferry, MD. Elevation change: -87 feet. Hotel – Shepherdstown: Thomas Shepherd Inn. Hotel – White’s Ferry/Leesburg: Comfort Inn Suites. Breakfast was great at the Shepherdstown B&B and we headed out of town at about 9:30. After breakfast we packed up and hit the road to start the first day on the C&O Towpath trail. There are not a lot of food options between Cumberland and Little Orleans, so we stopped at a Save A Lot grocery store to pick up some apples and beef jerky. Seeing America at 10 miles per hour. Day 4: Meyersdale to Cumberland, MD. Elevation change: -1481 feet. Hotel – Meyersdale: Yoder’s Guest House. Hotel – Cumberland: Bruce House Inn. Today was a great day on the trail. The first part of the ride continued to be uphill. After about 8 miles we hit the eastern continental divide, which was at 2390 feet elevation. From there on throughout the rest of the day, it was basically downhill. Yipee! You can see what we have to look forward to the rest of the trip!
