Garden Creek Archaeological Project. Exploring the past in WNC. Newer posts →. January 25, 2012. Thoroughly settled into the chilly winter term, I am starting to digitize some of the excavation maps we drew in the field. Of course, we took hundreds and hundreds of photos to document what we were digging, but as we begin interpreting some of these deposits, our schematic maps are proving very helpful in clarifying patterns that are difficult to make out in photos. In contrast, Zones A and B, both of which...

Garden Creek Archaeological Project. Exploring the past in WNC. A Visit from the Arthur Morgan School (aka a great day at Garden Creek). The ditch and the dogs →. March 23, 2012. After four days of unseasonably awesome weather, it’s raining in Canton. But, if you’re going to wait out some thunder showers, you may as well do it at the local grocery store while updating the blog. West profile of refuse pit inside the enclosure. The rain appears to be stopping (famous last words), so back to the site it is!

https://southeasternshellresearch.wordpress.com/2013/04/26/warmish-weather-flotation

Warm(ish) Weather = Flotation! In archaeology there are several methods of collecting and processing data and a lot of them can be performed in the lab. Sometimes, however, there is a need to do what is called flotation (click on this link to see a short video of flotation using a commercially-made tank). This is when a sample is put into a deep screen which sits inside a tank that is being pumped with water from below the screen. Flotation tank set-up (photo by Abigail Hyndman). MCAP Field School, Week 7: Parting is such sweet sorrow…. I think some of the students were a bit sad. I remember that feeling after my first field school. You grow close to a group of people, you get used to seeing them everyday, and then bam! We close this week with some fun facts and statistics from this season (but be sure to check back in July — we will be blogging from the lab):. We recorded over 245 field specimens. We used just about 250 50-lb feed bags for sample collection. We consumed a cumula...

MCAP Field School, Week 6: Rounding the corner. There are only 4 field days left to our field school, but that doesn’t mean we get to sit in the shade and eat ice cream for the next week! This week we moved a lot of dirt (per usual), learned some new tricks (like the GPR), and began the final stages of full documentation — photos, mapping (lots of mapping), sediment profiles, radiocarbon samples, column sampling, and the like. MCAP Field School student Pam Hoffman excavates a 50×50 cm column sample.

MCAP Field School, Week 7: Beginning of the end. Today we began the several-day long process of closing up the site. We have some documentation to finish, but we now have three units officially backfilled. Backfilling is always bittersweet. You spend weeks carefully excavating a square area in very small increments. . . Dr Peres collecting some final samples before the unit is backfilled. Only to throw all the dirt back in in a matter of an hour or so. There is much more of this in our very near future!

Just another WordPress.com weblog. Ah January…….that time of the year when seed catalogs arrive and you can begin to dream of plants pushing up through the earth. I can’t help but comment on the situation around the world. Different religions and cultures are showing hostility. What would a garden be if not for the variety of plants within it? Today I am planting my Easter grass. The trays for under pots are great for doing that. Potting soil and some rye grass seeds work well. As the trays o...Next week...

Garden Creek Archaeological Project | Exploring the past in WNC

Garden Creek Archaeological Project. Exploring the past in WNC. The ditch and the dogs. March 25, 2012. This past week, a handful of special guests helped to excavate Unit 12 — the last unit of the project! Their efforts yielded the clearest profile views of the earthwork ditch that we’ve seen yet. After which there wasn’t much left for taking micromorphology samples. Last, in Unit 8, we allowed the profiles to dry out too much before sampling, which led to some pretty messy micromorph blocks. Though par...
