Garden Gal Cooks

Tuesday, January 4, 2011. I'm about to finish reading a book by Tosca Reno called The Eat-Clean Diet Recharged! I'm pretty excited to get creative in the kitchen with fresh, healthy foods and plan on losing a few pounds in the process. I've been asked to blog the journey, so.the journey begins. Before reading Tosca's book I had already decided to cook through a cookbook this year, then thought "why not make it a healthy cookbook? I will be cooking through The Essential Eating Well Cookbook. This is a var...

Garden Gal Cooks: Caesar Salad Dressing

http://gardengalcooks.blogspot.com/2010/04/caesar-salad-dressing.html

Thursday, April 29, 2010. Warning: Once you make your own Caesar Salad Dressing made from fresh ingredients, you may find it very difficult to go back to a store brand. 2 -3 Fresh Egg Yolks (depending on the size). At least 2 Garlic Cloves (add more if you like. I use 4 or 5). 1/8-1/4 Cu. Lemon Juice. 1/4-1/2 cu. Parmesan Cheese. 1 tsp Anchovy Paste. 1/2 Cu. Olive Oil (Canola if you need a substitute). Salt and Pepper to taste. Obviously this is a dressing that is to be played with according to your taste.

Garden Gal Cooks: Roasted Radishes

http://gardengalcooks.blogspot.com/2010/05/roasted-radishes.html

Sunday, May 2, 2010. This is a variety of Radish called Easter Egg. They are able to grow much larger than most without getting pithy. I recently boasted about how much I don't like Radishes. I tried these, and have changed my mind. They're quite yummy, especially the white ones. If you like cooked cabbage, you should love this recipe. Wash and pat the radishes dry. Drizzle with Olive Oil, and sprinkle Sea Salt to taste. May 3, 2010 at 3:19 PM. Do radishes grow easily from seed? May 4, 2010 at 4:36 AM.

Sunday, April 25, 2010. It's quite likely none of you would ever have ridden in my car prior to receiving this email. It's true that it is usually jammed full of stuff- tools, tarps, 50lb sacks of seed potatoes. But after receiving this email I feel certain almost all of you would turn down my offer of a ride even if I made room for you by moving the backpack sprayer into the trunk. phoenix farms: March 2010

http://phoenixfarms.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 30, 2010. The cold and wet winter weather is going to cause the CSA to be delayed but that actually works out well. This year the CSA spring season will last 8 weeks and run from May through June. This will also allow me to fall in line with the Know Your Farms multi-farm CSA. They source food weekly from several local farmers. They too will operate year round with four distinct seasons. 12 families are joining me for my own CSA, but I'll also be a part of the Know Your Farms CSA. I'll be ...

phoenix farms: csa pickup buffet style

http://phoenixfarms.blogspot.com/2010/05/csa-buffet-style-pickup.html

Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Csa pickup buffet style. Last week was the Phoenix Farms Spring CSA Pickup Number One. We did it buffet style. Instead of containers prepared ahead of time, CSA members weighed their own sweet potatoes on the spot. Then they grabbed a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs and were direct as to which veggies to take and which to choose from. I thought it went very smoothly. Not much rain though this week so I got the first of the drip irrigation lines installed. They are running right now...

phoenix farms: may already

http://phoenixfarms.blogspot.com/2010/05/hello-everyone-i-doubt-im-only-one.html

Tuesday, May 4, 2010. There is an exception; two actually. The squash and zucchini I planted 2 weeks ago were up and putting on true leaves last Friday. When I checked them on Sunday the entire crop had been destroyed by Cucumber Beetles. I replanted on Monday. I'll have to spray Spinosad, an organically approved pesticide, on a regular basis and I'll have squash and zucchini two weeks later than I might have. As someone I know says, that's farming. And a choice of two of the following:. Lambs quarter is...

phoenix farms: Lambs Quarter Recipes

http://phoenixfarms.blogspot.com/2010/05/lambs-quarter-recipes.html

Tuesday, May 4, 2010. Lambs Quarter recipes. Yes your cooking with weeds. Remove leaves from stem and wash (there is a slight "dusty" feel to the leaves which is normal and will wash off for the most part). 1 1/2 cups of leaves. 1/4 cup parmesan cheese. 1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil. Blend using a wooden spoon carefully to push the mixture into the blades without hitting the spoon. Add olive oil as needed to get a paste like mixture while blending. Uses for the pesto:. On Pizza instead of tomato sauce. The ma...

phoenix farms: attack!

http://phoenixfarms.blogspot.com/2010/04/attack.html

Wednesday, April 14, 2010. This guy greeted me one night last week when I went to put the chickens up. He went home hungry. I shoved my camera in his face which provoked this furious picture but really he wasn't hard to dispatch. And, in the last few days it is apparent that yes, the potatoes I planted several weeks ago are in fact coming up. It looks like I will in fact have scalloped potatoes again this year. A basic scalloped potatoes recipe baked in the oven. Cook Time: 45 minutes. 2 cups scalded milk.

phoenix farms: May 2010

http://phoenixfarms.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 25, 2010. CSA Week Four : Garlic Scape Season. As the subject line of this email suggests it's that time of year when we harvest garlic scapes, the immature flowers of the garlic plant. Garlic scapes are more mild than straight garlic. One of my favorite ways to use them is put them in the food processor, added Parmesan cheese, olive oil and walnuts and out pops excellent pesto. It also freezes well. It's a short season so look for them at the market over the next few weeks. 1 loaf of bread.
