My Back Yard & Beyond: Coal sludge: clean and sparkly!
http://gardenshare.blogspot.com/2008/12/coal-sludge-clean-and-sparkly.html
My Back Yard and Beyond. From micro to macro. Tuesday, December 30, 2008. Coal sludge: clean and sparkly! The way the "clean coal" cheerleaders sis-boom-bah. You'd think emissions are the only thing about burning coal that is the least bit troublesome. They conveniently avoid discussing the impacts of extracting the (non-renewable) raw materials and post-combustion byproducts like toxic coal sludge, 5.4 million cubic yards of which escaped an 80-acre impoundment. The National Research Council estimates.

My Back Yard & Beyond: Smooth earth snake or rough earth snake?
http://gardenshare.blogspot.com/2010/03/smooth-earth-snake-or-rough-earth-snake.html
My Back Yard and Beyond. From micro to macro. Thursday, March 18, 2010. Smooth earth snake or rough earth snake? I see one or the other in the garden frequently. This one was under a clay pot I moved yesterday. I've never been able to tell a rough earth snake ( Virginia striatulata. From a smooth earth snake ( Virginia valeriae. The field guide descriptions are so similar. This one certainly felt smooth. However, according to Amphibians and Reptiles of the Carolinas and Virginia. March 21, 2010 at 6:04 AM.
My Back Yard & Beyond: Park Seed files Chapter 11
http://gardenshare.blogspot.com/2010/04/park-seed-files-chapter-11.html
My Back Yard and Beyond. From micro to macro. Monday, April 5, 2010. Park Seed files Chapter 11. Fifty percent of the seed sales in the world are rung up by Monsanto and Dupont. How long will it be before Monsanto has all of the world's seeds in its dirty, greedy pockets? I received this press release from Park Seed/J&P today:. The Geo. W. Park Seed Company, Inc. (ParkSeed.com) has been providing innovative, top-quality gardening products to generations of American gardeners since 1868. How would clean c...

Budding and Blooming: June 2013
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 24, 2013. Our house is finally finished and we moved most of our stuff this weekend! It is very exciting to actually be living here and have some time to take care of the new garden. It has been neglected, but I'm still glad I took the time to get some things planted this spring. I just couldn't imagine not growing veggies this summer. Today I spent unpacking box after box. I always think I don't have that much stuff. until I move! Friday, June 21, 2013. The plan was to till up some beds and...

Budding and Blooming: September 2012
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 3, 2012. It's time for the transition from summer to fall, which I'm looking forward too. I will miss all the summer crops of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and more, but I will not miss the heat, humidity, and mosquitoes! I've been clearing out the spent plants and planting fall crops. The challenge with planting fall crops is that it is still in the 90s with not a lot of rain, so keeping the soil moist enough for seeds to germinate takes effort. I had a second bed of corn planted in the...

Budding and Blooming: February 2014
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 15, 2014. Starting Over, Farming Style. Last year's garden was not a success. I wouldn't call it a complete failure because it did provide food for the deer! But let's not dwell on the past, there's a new spring just around the corner and I have hopes for a productive year (and plans for a deer fence! Here is Domino exploring the snow covered garden. I did start my first seeds last weekend: cabbage, peppers, and tomatoes. Now that the snow is melting, I'm very excited for sprin...I lov...

Budding and Blooming: March 2013
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 18, 2013. I have a mini harvest to report this week. I pulled a carrot that looked large from the top, but turns out is was really short and stout. Oh well, it was still sweet and tasty. I also harvested some mini side shoots from the broccoli. Then there is the ole standby, Swiss chard. It seems no matter the season, Swiss chard keeps on growing. Carrot 1.9 oz. Broccoli 0.5 oz. Swiss chard 2.3 oz. Weekly total: 4.7 oz. Monday, March 11, 2013. After falling off the gardening blog bandwagon.

Budding and Blooming: August 2012
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 27, 2012. The summer crops are still chugging along, but at a much slower rate. The melons are withering away and I probably only have one more to pick (or for the squirrels to pick, depending who gets to it first! I wasn't much of a photographer this week, but I do have one picture of Saturday's harvests:. Carrots: 15.2 oz. Banana pepper: 0.8 oz. Bell pepper: 8.4 oz. Yellow pear tomatoes: 1.5 lbs. Tomatoes: 1.6 lbs. Green beans: 11.2 oz. Watermelon: 6.9 lbs. Weekly total: 12.2 lbs. Two we...

Sunday, March 16, 2014. Spring Garden Plans: Wide Row Gardening. The garden has grown to monstrous proportions this year. I have nine rows that are 65 ft long. I am using a wide row method in the garden. I have plenty of space to do traditional, single rows, but it seems to leave way too much space for weeds to grow. And did I mention that the garden is large? The less space for weeds, the better! So what to plant in all this space? Well, this is my current plan:. Row 1: Corn, sunflowers, and amaranth.

http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 22, 2013. This week in the garden has been interesting to say the least. and not really in a good way. I came home from TN last Tuesday to find some tomatoes on the kitchen counter that J had picked. There was a not so good story about how these tomatoes came to be picked. If you remember last week, my tomato plants were not doing too well, except for a few at the end of the row. Well, guess which tomato plants got destroyed? I also harvested some beets. On a happy note, the cucumbers are do...
Occupy Wall Street - a potential solution - The Journey is the Prize
http://harmonyartblog.weebly.com/harmony-art-blog/occupy-wall-street-my-solution
The Journey is the Prize. Stay connected on the latest:. Occupy Wall Street - a potential solution. Back in 2004, I vividly remember waking up from a dream with this vision of what was wrong with our economy and how it could be fixed. The latest Occupy Wall Street Movement has this back on my mind. . . But the people part has, in my opinion, in this country, only gotten worse. Case in point, check out this graph. Budding and Blooming: Harvest Monday 8/11/14
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2014/08/harvest-monday-81114.html
Tuesday, August 12, 2014. I've been a bit overwhelmed this week, which is why my Harvest Monday is on Tuesday. I was out of town last week and then came back to a pile of veggies and a garden overrun with weeds, fungus and bugs. Luckily this should be the last time I have to go out of town for awhile. I think next year I need to have a travel moratorium for July and August! I picked the first watermelon. It was a small one and was alright, but definitely could have been riper. Several of the melo...I did...

Budding and Blooming: October 2014
http://sanguinaria-budding.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 20, 2014. Life has been a bit too busy the last couple of months and there hasn't been too much going on in the garden. August and September were the months of garden pests. I had squash bugs, Mexican bean bugs, vine borers, pickle worms, cucumber beetles, hornworms, and so many more. They ate and ate and I kind of surrendered and gave up on the garden. I'd like to say I'm halfway done, but I may have a bit more than that to dig. So far I have 64 lbs of sweet potatoes! The peppers have be...

My Back Yard and Beyond. From micro to macro. Saturday, July 3, 2010. Labels: Summer 2010 garden. Sunday, May 16, 2010. Open letter to Silk Soy Milk and the White Wave Company:. I had been wondering what was up with my latest carton of Vanilla Silk, which tastes funny. Cloying! Why do you think they're so damn popular? Did we learn nothing from the New Coke fiasco? Not to mention that sleight-of-hand with the new "all natural" label instead of "organic". High fructose corn syrup? I expected more from you!
