The African American Museum in Philadelphia was founded in 1976 and its purpose is to preserve, interpret and exhibit the heritage of African Americans. This is not just limited to those of African descent living in America but also Africans and diasporic Africans. It is the first of its kind sponsored by a city. It uses the arts in order to convey the achievements of African Americans from pre-colonial times to present day.
