Southern Kayak Kronicles: Night fishing produced snook, tarpon, seatrout and beat the July heat

http://gibbysfishingblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/night-fishing-produced-snook-tarpon.html

Steve Gibson is an avid angler, writer and photographer who lives in Sarasota, Fla. Follow his daily pursuits and thoughts through his blog. Saturday, August 1, 2015. Night fishing produced snook, tarpon, seatrout and beat the July heat. F July wasn't the hottest month I've experienced in Florida, it certainly had to be among the warmest. Snook hang out around dock lights and often are easy fly-rod targets. Dock lights attract small baitfish and shrimp. Those critters attract predator fish. When I get to...

Ovember proved to be just what was anticipate with improved fishing for a variety of species. Typical oscar in The Everglades. My usual "modus operandi" is to start fishing ...

Steve Gibson is an avid angler, writer and photographer who lives in Sarasota, Fla. Follow his daily pursuits and thoughts through his blog. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Tarpon, snook and shark topped the list for June. This hefty blacktip shark ate a 1 1/2-pound live jack crevalle in southern Tampa Bay. Ne word describes June around Sarasota: hot. The fishing wasn't pretty close to hot, too. We caught a variety of fish during the month, although we concentrated on tarpon and snook. Later in the day, Littleto...

Steve Gibson is an avid angler, writer and photographer who lives in Sarasota, Fla. Follow his daily pursuits and thoughts through his blog. Saturday, January 31, 2015. Surgeries over, now it's back to fishing Sarasota Bay and other areas. Bill Haarz of Sarasota battles a fish on fly rod off Stephens Point in Sarasota Bay. Anuary was an abbreviated fishing month for Southern Drawl. I had two eye surgeries over nine days that diminished the time I could be on the water. We returned to the Myakka River out...

Saltwater kayak fisherman: DIY Hatch Liner / Gear Bag

http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2013/01/diy-hatch-liner-gear-bag.html

DIY Hatch Liner / Gear Bag. The only real solution I could find was to insert a collapsible ground bait bowl. Into the hull. I originally tried to insert the large version (32cm) of the Daiwa Airity bowl into through the centre 8” hatch. I managed to break the re-enforcing hoop in the process, perhaps if I’d inserted it via the front hatch that might not have happened! To neaten the job up and to provide an even sealing surface when re-fitting the bag, I added a ring of neoprene to the top of the bag.

Saltwater kayak fisherman: Shimano Charter Special 1000 LD – Overhaul

http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2010/12/shimano-charter-special-1000-ld-service.html

Shimano Charter Special 1000 LD – Overhaul. I’ve been absolutely itching to get out and wet a line as of late, though due to a combination of work and bad weather it just hasn’t happened. That said, I hope to hit the water within the week, fingers crossed. The original washer is a canvas type washer, though the fibre washer from a Penn HT-100 (part no. 6-5600) is virtually a direct replacement. I purchased a few of these washers from Mikes Reel Repair. The schematic for this reel can be found here. The f...

DIY – Hobie AI Trailer. It’s not so long ago since I put the finishing touches to the latest incarnation of my kayak trailer. Since I wrote that article I’ve extended the drawbar by a metre which basically made it ideal for my Adventure Island. I’m still awaiting the Hobie AI cradles, hopefully they’ll be here in the next month or so. Though in the mean time I placed some 110mm waste pipe on the bottom slot which permits both the Outback. It really is as simple as that! The trailer is rated at 750kg gros...

Rigging the 2015 Hobie Outback and Adventure Island for Structure Scan. I’ve fitted the Lowrance HDS 7 Gen 3. Onto my 2015 Outback and it came with a Structure Scan transducer. Structure Scan combines down scan imaging and side scan imaging. It’s certainly great technology to have on a kayak, some would say an overkill, but I’m really enjoying having such enhanced capability on the kayak. Here’s the result followed by an explanation of how I did it. The biggest issue was getting a lockable hinged joint t...

Saltwater kayak fisherman: Kayak Livewell & Dry Box (Part 2)

http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2010/04/kayak-livewell-dry-box-part-2.html

Kayak Livewell and Dry Box (Part 2). In part 1 I covered the basic construction of my dual purpose kayak dry box/livewell. The were certain features that I wished to have with regards to the livewell, these were as follows:. Dual water level to cater to different sized bait. Internal aerator pump to minimise noise. Easy pump priming when afloat. On/off switch to be easily reachable. Alternative power source if required. External battery charging point. Ability to drain the tank when afloat. The question ...

Saltwater kayak fisherman: What cooler bag?

http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2015/08/what-cooler-bag.html

On the Big Game I had a Flambeau marine box behind me which was ideal for storing frozen bait wrapped in paper with a couple of ice blocks. I could keep bait from for many hours, often bringing it home and straight back into the freezer. I’ve yet to find a good solution for the Hobie’s as the tankwell area is smaller and wont accommodate the dry box. And flambeau. As both the Outback. That raised the question of which cooler bag? I also decided to pick up a Grauvell cooler bag (15Litre - 30x20x22cm)....

Saltwater kayak fisherman: Hobie Mirage Outback – Initial review

http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2012/10/hobie-mirage-outback-initial-review.html

Hobie Mirage Outback – Initial review. It’s been approximately five years since I purchased my first fishing kayak, an Ocean Prowler Big Game. Some time ago I took an interest in Hobie kayaks, I found the idea of the Mirage Drive. Quite fascinating. The Adventure. Model initially appealed to me, though I really wanted maximum stability so I soon found myself looking at the Outback. Here are the basic specifications of the Hobie Outback, I believe the one I have is the 2010 model. As mentioned earlier the...

Esthwaite Water – A weekend in the Lake District. I’d never fished the Esthwaite Grand Slam kayak competition before, though I finally got around to correcting that this weekend. Esthwaite Water is one of the smaller and lesser known lakes in the Lake District national park in northern England. It is situated between the much larger lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water. I picked up a couple of friends en-route before heading north on a journey that took a good six hours, it was quite a slog! I certainl...

Saltwater kayak fisherman: New camera – Olympus TG-4

http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2015/08/new-camera-olympus-tg-4.html

New camera – Olympus TG-4. Out with the old and in with the new! I decided to replace my ageing (still working) Olympus 795SW. After 6 years of service with the new Olympus TG-4. Let's hope it lasts as long as its predecessor. Obviously technology has progressed since I purchased the 795SW. The new TG-4 packs a host of features as well as much improved image quality and size. Full review to follow is a few weeks once I’ve clocked up some serious time with it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Kajakviss...
