Gidget's Garden: Growing Fast
http://www.gidgetsgarden.org/2014/05/growing-fast.html
Monday, May 5, 2014. One of the first things I learned about gardening is that plants will increase growth significantly as temperatures rise. I saw this first hand a little in San Diego during the "heat" of the summer but with the non-existent weather there it wasn't as apparent as it is here. Gidget isn't looking forward to summer. She plans to spend a lot of time in her box. We haven't perfected the timing yet but we are certainly doing better this year than last. And while we're talking about rapid g...
Gidget's Garden: Making our first worm bin
http://www.gidgetsgarden.org/2011/08/making-our-first-worm-bin.html
Monday, August 8, 2011. Making our first worm bin. I made our first vermicomposting (worm) bin yesterday and I am going to show you how I did it. 2 storage containers, with lids. Brown paper bags (or other shredded no glossy paper for bedding). Ready to get started. I drilled lots of holes in the bottom of one of the containers for drainage and air flow. Container with holes goes inside of the bin without holes. I also drilled lots of holes in the lid that I will use on top of the bin. Our beautiful worm...
Gidget's Garden: When the pears fall, make hard cider
http://www.gidgetsgarden.org/2013/09/when-pears-fall-make-hard-cider-part-one.html
Monday, September 23, 2013. When the pears fall, make hard cider. We are making a 5 gallon batch of hard cider from most of the pears we harvested off our two trees. Pears curing in pantry. I'm still adding my own yeast and this time we bought some champagne yeast rather than the plain active dry yeast we used last time. We could be really brave and try fermenting it with the natural yeasts on the pears but that can have varied results that aren't always successful. Before you start, you'll want to make ...
Gidget's Garden: Planning your vegetable garden
http://www.gidgetsgarden.org/2014/08/planning-your-vegetable-garden.html
Monday, August 4, 2014. Planning your vegetable garden. I have been on what I think most people who aspire to have big gardens would consider a high point in their effort. We brought in enough cardboard, growers mix and wood chips. To cover about 575 square feet or 25 by 23 feet with at least 8 inches of material. This is more space than I have ever had to play with at one time. It is about 25 x 23 feet but because of walkways and borders it is really about 20 x 21 feet of planting space. Mound out of th...
Gidget's Garden: Creating a hugelkultur garden bed
http://www.gidgetsgarden.org/2013/09/creating-hugelkultur-garden-bed.html
Wednesday, September 18, 2013. Creating a hugelkultur garden bed. What we did have readily on hand was an incredible amount of wood piled up in various stages of decay. We chipped what we could for walkways around the raised garden beds but we were left with a bunch of rotted woody matter and some very large pieces that are also in various states of decay. I came across a very good website about hugelkultur. Hugelkultur will keep my plant roots out of reach of the the gophers that the minions can't catch.

Gidget's Garden
Tuesday, August 5, 2014. First plants go in the Back to Eden Garden bed. We had a great time planning. And then planting our new garden bed. There's really nothing different about planting in this bed than other types of garden beds except you need to move aside the very thick layer of wood chips to get to the soil beneath. We started by measuring out the rows and the moving all the wood chips aside. Once the chips are moved to the side, there's plenty of soil underneath to plant 4 inch plants in. I was ...
