The Conscientious Omnivore – Girl in Gumboots
https://girlingumboots.wordpress.com/2013/12/02/1107
December 2, 2013. December 12, 2013. For a few years of my early twenties, I was “vegetarian”. This happened because I was on a game drive in the Kruger National Park. While watching a small family of kudu. Kill myself. So when I craved meat, I’d have seafood or chicken without a twinge of guilt. I then read two incredible books, namely: ‘My Year of Meats’ by Ruth L Ozeki. And ‘ Eating Animals’ by Jonathan Safran Foer. I put my money where my mouth is. But I hope Kauai. Proof in the Pudding – Girl in Gumboots
https://girlingumboots.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/proof-in-the-pudding
July 18, 2012. July 18, 2012. Proof in the Pudding. Ginger Student returned to the institute in time for our Monday meeting but that gleam is still in her eye so I was curious as to what story the data would tell me…. The first thing I did was examine her transit pattern to distinguish between the different travel modes she’s known to utilise:. Speed relative to altitude (data returned by SMRU tag via ARGOS). At first glance, it appeared that she briefly travelled at impossibly high speeds! Without more ...
Ebb and Flow – Girl in Gumboots
https://girlingumboots.wordpress.com/2012/08/26/ebb-and-flow
August 26, 2012. December 12, 2013. Well, I thought I knew until I got to St. Andrews. 8221; was when we hiked the Otter Trail. Last year and had to time our crossing of the Bloukrans River. Otter Trail awesomeness (photo courtesy of Ben Hobbit Pirate Loveday). And I’ve survived every low tide without being washed away by a resulting tsunami. So why does the tide go out by a mile here, and only a few meters in Cape Town? We experience the same gravitational pull from the moon, right? Wherever the Sun or ...
In a Nutshell! – Girl in Gumboots
https://girlingumboots.wordpress.com/2012/07/31/in-a-nutshell
July 31, 2012. August 26, 2012. So… what did you get up to today? Well, I spent my morning on West Sands. Helping a friend search for seals. Dead or alive (personally, I was hoping for the latter). Biologist in her natural habitat, scanning for seals. Postcards from the edge…. Is holding a competition at the moment, and the winner will get their thesis illustrated by THE Jorge Cham. But do you know how hard it is to describe your PhD topic in under 2 minutes? I can learn a surprising amount about the Sou...
Tag, you’re it! – Girl in Gumboots
https://girlingumboots.wordpress.com/2012/07/10/tag-youre-it
July 10, 2012. August 7, 2012. Tag, you’re it! Fortunately, I submitted a proposal when Girl in Gumboots first arrived in Scotland there’s very little regional data on the foraging behaviour of ginger students relative to their environment so there’s a definite need for more research. A study undertaken in Cape Town showed this particular female exhibited a propensity for food markets, as well as cheese and wine farms, but the physical drivers here are very different. The tag I’ll be using not only...

Should I stay or should I go? | All At Sea
https://samspostgrads.wordpress.com/2012/09/03/should-i-stay-or-should-i-go
The Art of Baking and the PhD Student. Yesterday was a bad day. But today is better. →. Should I stay or should I go? September 3, 2012. Contributed by Karen Alexander. In some countries, it is even necessary to move around in order to obtain tenure. As noted in this Nature article. Although, I guess it could also be argued that in the current economic recession research funding has become the main trigger of international mobility in academia. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Yesterday was a bad ...

Girl in Guadeloupe | A journey of pleasure and pain
A journey of pleasure and pain. Life in (my garden in )Guadeloupe. Yeah, there are still some good things happening. Stuff grows really fast here. Choose the right plants with the help of a good. And you can create an impressive garden with almost zero know-how. I have almost zero know-how. And almost zero garden, but that’s because I’m lazy, not because it’s impossible. Wait, could that be a theme to my life’s failures? My new silent in my head mantra) and look at some pictures of life! Which brings me ...
Destination Hogar 10/09 - 01/10
Destination Hogar 10/09 - 01/10. Sunday, January 10, 2010. Well, the last week of my 11 week stay the Minneapolis team was at the Hogar. It was wonderful having them around for support during the final days. They arrived on Friday the 1st and I surprised them by coming to the airport with Jorge and that was nice. They, (I think) were happy to see me, and I was happy to see all of them! Here is George Patronas (friend from Duluth, MN that came on the trip) and I at lunch in Antigua! What a blessed week.
The Happy Adventurer.
Thursday, February 13, 2014. The Beginning of Something Awesome. Today was day seven into my guiding course. I feel like I have been a part of it for seven years. My teachers rock the class room and never fail to inspire me. They ooze knowledge into their lectures and spin webs of enchantment over everyone in the class. And then there is little, old me. The youngest student. Comedy relief character. Over enthusiast. Study nerd. Not sure whether to hope that I fit in or stand out. View my complete profile.

This blog is my space to write about my 170lb weight loss journey and to share inspiration, recipes, fitness tips and more. Monday, August 25, 2014. Last bits of debauchery. I don’t know what will happen with this blog. I like the idea of sharing my story and struggles, so I’d like to keep it up. I am doing a lot of good poetry writing and might have some big work changes on the horizon so no promises, but know that I am still out here doing my best to live a healthy and fun life. Girl In Hats
Saturday, November 19, 2011. So, I became quite upset this morning when I could not find my cereal. It is an "oat flakes with blueberry clusters" cereal. Sounds pretty amazing, right? 65279;. 65279;. 65279;. So, as I scoured the kitchen, screaming and swearing at my empty house, I realized that, oh, yeah, I have a cabinet. Just for my cereal. And then I spit it out. Now, I have nothing against eating healthy. I really try to, I do. The reason it's hard for me to eat healthy is. I am stuck at h...
