Rank and file power and union reforms. July 5, 2013. This was originally published on rankandfile.ca. Since the economic crisis the union movement in Canada has faced a number of defeats at the bargaining table and on the picket line. On top of that the union movement has had to do battle with a slew of regressive legislative attacks on collective bargaining at the provincial and federal level, of which Bill 115 in Ontario and federal Bill C-377. Are but the most egregious examples. Before jumping into w...

Building Strategically: An Introduction to Solidarity Halifax. August 22, 2013. How can the left fight back in the age of austerity? This is a clear and constant question being posed by and to people on the left. When the worldwide economic crisis hit in 2008, it was clear there would not be an immediate shift toward radical alternatives to capitalism. Still, five years into the crisis there has been little growth or development in the position of the anti-capitalist left. We understand the process of fo...

The Battle At Canada Post And The Future Of Our Public Services (Updated). December 17, 2013. That Canada Post Corporation will end home delivery in urban areas, increase the cost of postage and layoff between 8,000 to 10,000 employees over the next five years is shameful. Even this claim of lessening letter volume. If you think that this is far-fetched just look at what happened to Royal Mail in Britain, which was privatized by the Cameron government this year. The head of Royal Mail when it was privati...

This has happened to me more times than I can count. It’s happened with teachers I know well, and teachers I have never met before. It’s happened at big and (normally) busy downtown studios, and at cozy small town centres. What have I learned? Isn’t all that discomfort precisely the result of not wanting to be centre of attention? Posted in Yoga practice.

From the Peoples’ Social Forum to an Organized Left. July 7, 2014. With the Peoples’ Social Forum. Approaching in August I thought I would jot down a couple of ideas about where the left is, what challenges it’s facing and what roads it could take. The major problems we face, climate change, growing inequality, democratic dispossession, etc. are the result of our political and economic system – capitalism. This can only happen if the working class itself takes charge in creating a more just society.

The missing piece: The far-left in the workplace | Hammerhearts

The missing piece: The far-left in the workplace. August 7, 2013. As the Canadian labour movement stumbles from defeat to defeat in this crisis period it is worth asking why this is the case. What accounts for the trade union movement’s inability to mount an effective political resistance to austerity? Is it the poor and unimaginative leadership? Maybe it is the ossified and inward-looking culture of trade unions. Is it the poor objective conditions of the crisis? That achieved substantial gains for the ...
