Independent Streak: April 2014
http://independent-streak.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 15, 2014. There was a certain sense of augury permeating what should have been known as "SPRING BREAK 2014! That began with my hasty, regrettable decision to tell the school that we'd be taking our son out 20 minutes early for vacation. Oh, the things you learn from school. We'd previously taken him out for 7 days, back during my Hawaiian. God, we owe you big time for that one. The first day at Newport Beach, we learned that Perry's Pizza, a landmark, and Matt's childhood favorite place, i...

Independent Streak: October 2013
http://independent-streak.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 15, 2013. We took a recent trip to. Which was breathtaking and spectacular, and we want to live there. Period. I'm a little haunted, however, by how yet another culture has been ruined via the relentless need for retail stores and knickknacks. When the three of us go on vacation, you can bet your American currency that you won't find us at "the mall." Look if you must, but we're out exploring. Explore we did, and Sam and I shared our birthday. :). Our dear friends John and Becky chose.

Independent Streak: Kinder Care
http://independent-streak.blogspot.com/2013/09/kinder-care.html
Sunday, September 01, 2013. It's Sunday, and I've been up since 6:08. This, be it told, is a consequence of kindergarten, and our new household training of "waking with the animals." I'm way better at it than my husband, a far cry from a "morning person," and my son, who is just like his dad. Go figure. Sam asked why they have rug time so much, and I went into a spiel about the importance of the Miss Krabappels of the world having control. "Your teacher needs your undivided attention. It's like w...Playi...

Independent Streak: July 2013

Monday, July 15, 2013. Tonsillectomy Love and Subtext. I prepared for this week for months, using most of my time consciously dreading it. Sam had a tonsillectomy last week, and I am pleasantly not astonished by his strength, tenacity and humor. The boy does amaze. Out of the gate, it was worse than I'd imagined. Sam won't ever allow us to give half-facts, or omit details. When we told him that his tonsils would be removed, he asked, "What exactly does the doctor do? Matt rubbed his body, and the nurses ...

Independent Streak: January 2014
http://independent-streak.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 13, 2014. Winter brings little encouragement. It has me gazing out the window late at night, waiting for Dr. Zhivago to proceed by on a horse donning a tattered soul and soiled blanket. The only thing missing is the Russian Revolution and a kitchen full of potatoes. No matter how much I plead, sleep will not give me what I want. A chronic insomniac, my body lies down at night, but my brain accelerates, and there I am, lying in an endless succession of thoughts. Nearly every night (meaning.

Independent Streak: How To Face A Crisis
http://independent-streak.blogspot.com/2014/02/how-to-face-crisis.html
Wednesday, February 05, 2014. How To Face A Crisis. So, I kind of went “all out” for Matt’s 40. Birthday. It seemed like a big enough deal, and I was so happy for him to be joining me in the “40s,” plus it seems that he is well in the throes of his midlife crisis. So I bought the boy some cookware, of course. But not just any cookware, oh no; I spent many pretty pennies and bought him a set of Mauviel copper. Made in France since 1830, I think it’ll get the job done. Annnnd, we were off! Kelly and Mike w...

Independent Streak: Thoughts on cold ice baths.
http://independent-streak.blogspot.com/2014/08/thoughts-on-cold-ice-baths.html
Saturday, August 23, 2014. Thoughts on cold ice baths. I have enjoyed watching the improvisation from friends as they’ve taken the Ice Bucket Challenge, and I’m surprised by how many people’s lives have been affected by this deadly disease. The funds being raised make me hopeful that a cure can one day be found. I always thought it was like getting cerebral palsy late in life (which never happens), and learning how to jump from “being” to “nothingness.”. ALS is like a palsy, as the body stops working....

Independent Streak: February 2013

Thursday, February 14, 2013. True Love and German Food. Today we celebrate Valentine's Day, our first date 8 years ago, and our love of Wienerschnitzel. We're having our annual lunch date at the Rathskeller, where Matt and I had date #1 in 2005. We'd been trying to sync our schedules for a week or so, and the only day that worked for both of us was February 14. On the phone, I said, "Um, you know that's Valentine's Day, right? Matt said of course he did. Links to this post. Wednesday, February 06, 2013.
