There are many resources that tell you how to play golf. The objective of GolfMystique.com is to enable you to play better golf through knowledge of how the forces of nature interact with a golf shot. Relevant physical concepts will be simply explained so you can apply them to improve your own game. Photo by Jim Gove. Music by Paul Bogataj.

Pinch the Ball

http://www.golfmystique.com/Pinch_the_Ball.html

When attempting to put a lot of backspin on the ball so that it stops, or even backs up, when it lands on the green, often it is said to "pinch" or "squeeze" the ball between the club and the ground. While that may be what it feels like, that cannot really be what happens. Consider further that if the ball where pinched by the club with the ground, that the friction of the ball with the ground would inhibit the ball's spin. An excellent example of a wedge hitting a golf ball can be found here.

Sidehill Lies

http://www.golfmystique.com/Sidehill_Lies.html

Which way will it go? To compensate for the altered flight, the aim can be adjusted toward the side that is uphill, and the ball can curve back to the intended direction. Be aware that the ball will also not fly as high because the full aerodynamic force is not oriented upward, so distance will be affected. Shaft down, toe up. Then twist shaft, open face.

3

Spin

http://www.golfmystique.com/Spin.html

The Essence of Spin. Nearly all the aerodynamics you need to know). Baseball pitchers use spin to throw balls that curve in various directions. A ping pong ball demonstrates radical curvature because the ball is very light relative to the aerodynamic force generated.

4

Loft Forces

http://www.golfmystique.com/Loft_Forces.html

What's Up With Loft? The forces from the club to the ball. The force that the club generates in its direction of motion can be separated into two components, one perpendicular to the clubface that impacts the ball in that direction, and another parallel to the clubface that imparts spin.

5

Draw-Fade

http://www.golfmystique.com/Draw-Fade.html

The Case for Straight. On opposite sides of it. This means that any curving shot has greater drag due to the additional sideways lift force being created through spin, hence this greater drag will operate to shorten the flight of the ball. So, if a straight shot should go farthest, and shots curving either way reduced by equal amounts, why do draws often appear to go farther and fades not as far? Fly higher because opening the clubface increases loft. Remember, a ball hit straight does not have a compone...
