Rhymes and reasons | Gonecycling (again)

Still riding. Still writing. Still wondering. Friday 13 February 2015. Take paper, pen, and wait for words to flow. Breathing suspended. All is possible. The blank page stretches out; last night’s new snow. Untrodden, where we may plant footprints; show. The path we took, and others where to go. Each poem is a map; a traveller’s guide. To strange lands we have passed through, wandering. Wide-eyed, alert and innocent inside. Our own heads; to the many roads we’ve tried,. Need not depend on fickle memory.

Still riding. Still writing. Still wondering. Wednesday 28 January 2015. Something’s stirring under Hampshire. Three kilometres below. Quiet streets and peaceful pastures, elemental forces grow. There’s a shuffling in the strata; England’s bones are realigned. And citizens of Winchester are wonderstruck to find. Their cups and saucers rattling. Anxious now, they call the cops. As they feel their floorboards flexing, sense a shudder in the shops. Has there been an act of terror? Has a gas main gone awry?

Still riding. Still writing. Still wondering. Wednesday 21 May 2014. Too long I’ve sat in silence in this cell. Come, guards, unlock the door: it’s way past time. To step into the searchlight beam and tell. The truth, confess the catalogue of crime. I have committed in the name of duty:. Twisted my mother tongue, made her a liar,. Robbed her at gunpoint of her strength and beauty,. Stripped her of virtue, put her up for hire. I just did as they told me; but excuses. The humble English poet has to live.

Still riding. Still writing. Still wondering. Monday 16 June 2014. A lesson learned when I was young: always. Climb straight back on each time you take a fall. Had it drummed in on sweating, circling days. With ‘heels down’, ‘elbows in’ and ‘sit up tall’). They taught me well, those steely souls who forced. Me to get up, brush myself off, remount. And carry on each time I was unhorsed. And tasted dust (more times than I can count). But now the saddle seems too high; the aches. Sonnet: Do or die. By, blur...

Still riding. Still writing. Still wondering. Tuesday 17 February 2015. We’re painting her bedroom. The little-girl pink. That she’s had on her walls ever since she was six. Has to go, we’ve been told. But it seems they don’t mix. Shades that truly reflect how fourteen-year-olds think. There’s an ocean of blues and a wide yawn of beige:. Peach, magnolia, lavender, calicos, creams. Way too placid and pale for her dramas and dreams;. Far too subtle and soft for this high-contrast age. There is, inside your...

That flits about Galapagous [1]. One species modified in beak and claw. By choices made adapting to the flinch. Of circumstances born out of the wrench. Of geologic time, the pitch and yaw. Playing with food, fabric and thread. Thursday, 11 December 2014. For the love of sprouts. A bit of a bonus blog today! Not the ultimate flapjack, more the ultimate sprout. I'm on a mission to convert all sprout-haters with this dish, which we've enjoyed (hugely) for lunch this week. It's so good, we had it twice! 1 Get over-excited in the vegetable aisle and grab a very large bag of Brussels sprouts. I had 750g here, and that fed two of us twice - serves four, indeed! 3 While the pancetta and onion are ...

Unbounded from the places spirit dwells,. Infected them and made them want to flee. Their fleeing even as Chicago seethed. And made them wonder if their slavery. Was more than whips and white men wreathed. In arrogance, but something in their souls,. Their consciousness, the very air they breathed. That, hidden, suddenly materialize.

Playing with food, fabric and thread. Tuesday, 30 September 2014. Teaching Tuesday - owls, butterflies and teapots. Goodness, where does the time go. Right. No messing about. We've practiced our free machining, and now we're ready to stitch something slightly more interesting than wiggly lines. How about a bit of applique? You get a sheet of Bondaweb. To throw away.only me? Make sure you overlap the pieces, you don't want gluey stuff getting onto your iron. I think this is Libby's piece:. Cut it out,.

Playing with food, fabric and thread. Friday, 20 March 2015. I've been so unbelievably slack with posting pictures of the amazing work happening in class, so now I'm going to have to pay for it with a massive post to show what we've been doing! First, way back in January, we indulged in my favourite stitchy exercise - strips of texture, sari silks and wot-not. These were then embellished with metal bits and pieces, in the following weeks, as we got more confident stitching on metal:. You can also stitch ...

Playing with food, fabric and thread. Friday, 24 April 2015. A while back a group of us planned a biggy "proper" exhibition, in a gallery and everything, and I started a series of work based on one of my husband's poems. Well then the others got cold feet, so we cancelled and my work was put in a box file and shelved. Fast forward and I actually have three exhibitions coming up this year, with an urgent need for new work! Sketchbook pages ready to be stitched and bound. Painted papers for collaging ideas.

Playing with food, fabric and thread. Sunday, 17 May 2015. Running to keep up. This blog is a very good indicator of the state of my mind. I've been absent from my blog for a long while, but here in spirit. Similarly I have felt all year that I am absent from my own life: full of intention, meeting all my obligations, but not actually there in person to experience or enjoy it. Making any sense? I take random photos of things I'm doing, such as making date flapjacks. Exam season is also upon us, and as I ...

Gonecycling | Poems from Sussex
10 December 2011 4 Comments. A two-foot tube of secrets. Waiting to be opened. With a bunch of keys. A slim precision rifle. A bright magic wand. Conjuring brooks and birdsong. Out of thin air. 1 November 2011 3 Comments. A Charm Against Ye Knavish Trick-or-Treaters. Attend ye, this All Hallows’ Eve,. Heed my warning: take thy leave,. Get ye hence, touch not this door,. Retrace thy steps, disturb no more. Our sweet repose at close of day. Thou art not welcome, go thy way. Thy witch’s hat and monster mask.

Still riding. Still writing. Still wondering. L’amour du vélo. Monday 26 March 2018. Of odd-shaped tubes and angles. And spider’s webs spun in silver steel. But no shared laughter, tedium or pain;. Enduring the same wild weather. Yet it knows no cold or drop of sweat;. When time slows and life shrinks. To fractured bits of inches. And scattered shards of seconds. It alone is left untouched. By fear, and all that follows. This bloodless, wordless better half. Makes us greater than ourselves;. Are even now...
