Sunday, July 28, 2013. July 28, 2013 Sunday Salon update. Leaving for Maine in two weeks. Reading Paul Doiron’s latest Maine warden mystery to set the mood. Even though Massacre Pond. Other reading news: Finished reviewing Book two of Jane Gardam’s trilogy: The Man With the Wooden Hat. Have also read book three, Last Friendsand need to write that review this week. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Reading as sanctuary; writing as refuge: a wish for Anna. Anna shows me her “homework” and fluently reads from a text. Her father, who takes almost everything, including the achievements of his children, in stride, remarks that he doesn’t remember spelling words like Antarctica. I know that reading is key to success and will serve her well, particularly in school. If she has reading skills now, academic success is one challenge we likely don’t need to worry about. As I read b...

Sunday, April 26, 2015. Sunday Salon: Reading mess: too many directions at once. I have ailing parents (97, and 92) that I've been visiting and was focused on them. I took the long drive again from Virginia to Massachusetts and listened to Stephen King's Revival. In a previous post - The Writer and the Governor, I began thinking about King, how I admired him and ought to read him again. It has been many (too many to count) years since I have picked up one of his books. So I picked Revival. As I tried to ...

wellwell: Salon post: The Girl on The Train becomes Train Wreck Girl for this reader
http://www.wellwell2.com/2015/04/salon-post-girl-on-train-becomes-train.html
Sunday, April 5, 2015. Salon post: The Girl on The Train becomes Train Wreck Girl for this reader. I finished The Girl on the Train. Much has been made of the "unreliable narrator" device. Rachel, the main voice, is a drunkard who experiences blackouts. Worked for me. About what I felt. Kind of indifferent although I would not want her as a roommate, friend, ex or ex of current partner. Sure of that. That said, the book this most strongly evokes for me is not Gone Girl,. Other notes: Rereading Cloud Atla...

Sunday, August 31, 2014. End of summer; back to books Sunday Salon: Aug. 31, 2014. After a burst of vacation/travel reading, I slowed down mid-August. Read much of Chris Bohjalian's The. For book club, but then couldn’t attend. The meeting, as I had some family conflicts that arose. Sandcastle. I started Niall Williams The History of the Rain,. But haven’t made great progress. The damn internet – and all the news sites I visit. Get in the way of good novels. I confess to a near-obsession. And hope to c.

Monday, March 30, 2015. It's Monday. I'm reading. I’m listening to:. The Girl on the Train. Finished Anansi Boys last night. Still listening to, may always be listening to. Joint project with hubby – Rebel Call. I think we need to schedule listen-together-dates or something. This isn’t working so well. Note to others: the first section was definitely my least favorite, but essential for setting up the rest of the book – which gets truly amazing the deeper you get. March 30, 2015 at 12:47 PM.
