Governing Thoughts: July 2010

http://governingthoughts.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

A blog (mostly) about the issues arising from my involvement as a school governor. Thursday, 29 July 2010. Putting your head above the parapet. I have had a couple of conversations in the last week about the benefits and dangers of putting your head above the parapet, so thought I might share my thoughts on the subject. The constant barrage can be tiring and ways of dealing with that are useful:. 1 Remember that it is not you. 2 Regard all comments as valuable feedback - they generally say as much about ...

Governing Thoughts: January 2013

http://governingthoughts.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

A blog (mostly) about the issues arising from my involvement as a school governor. Thursday, 31 January 2013. Is teaching a profession? Now, I am not one for attacking teachers, they generally do a brilliant job often in trying circumstances. I for one would not relish the prospect of a classfull of sometimes disruptive, sometimes challenging, sometimes 'lost' pupils, with no escape route for when I have had enough. Thursday, January 31, 2013. Links to this post. Thursday, 10 January 2013. Like one of th...

Governing Thoughts: February 2013

http://governingthoughts.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

A blog (mostly) about the issues arising from my involvement as a school governor. Thursday, 28 February 2013. With our beloved Mr Gove releasing headteachers to decide on teachers' pay, I was reminded of an excellent article by Simon Caulkin. Exploring the concept of performance related pay. This has now been published in Professional Manager. And if we are to 'incentivise' teachers how do we deal with other school staff who are also important? It is clear that we WILL have to deal with this situation w...

Governing Thoughts: December 2011

http://governingthoughts.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

A blog (mostly) about the issues arising from my involvement as a school governor. Thursday, 8 December 2011. I may be back! Well, after a bit of a break, I have been approached about the possibility of joining an IEB for a VERY local primary. I have always been a fan of IEBs in principle - after all, if a school fails Ofsted then there is surely a prima facie. Case that the leadership has failed the pupils and should be removed. The same, of course, applying to the Head. Looking forward to developments.

Archive for March, 2010. Key Stage 2 SATs – Should They Stay or Should They Go? As I spoke about in a previous post, the potential upcoming SATs boycott by NUT and NAHT members of Key Stage 2 SATs is bringing the issue right back to the top of the news. As well as being an issue for individual schools, it’s also a hot topic for governors – especially if you’re in a school with a head that decides on a potentially illegal boycot. So what do you think. Separate of the strike issue, should KS2 SATs go?

Self Evaluation Is Dead. Long Live Self Evaluation! September 24, 2010 at 9:16 pm. So today Michael Gove has confirmed the demise of the Self Evaluation Form – completed by schools to flag up gaps in their provision and as a tool for inspectors. A surprising amount of people are mourning the demise of the SEF – one poll had it at 50:50. While the SEF may have gone, self evaluation is here to stay, and now’s s great time to get ahead and think about how you’ll set up your own system. You are commenting us...

Archive for January, 2010. Partnership – The Magic Bullet. The government recently released a document giving the timescales for the implementation of their proposals in the 21st Century Schools White Paper. Notwithstanding whether they’ll actually get the opportunity to put it into practice with a general election in just a few months time, there’s no doubt what the key theme is – partnership. How to Improve Your School’s Website. As the public face of the school the school website can often be a hot topic of conversation in governors meetings (well it is in mine at least). Here’s how to take a comprehensive approach to improving your school’s website. Once you’ve set your goals you need a way to see the data. I’d recommend getting Google Analytics installed on your website for this. It’s free, easy to install and very powerful. Your IT team should be able to use ...Firstly borrow a few willin...

What Would Your Self Evaluation Say? | Supergovernor

What Would Your Self Evaluation Say? September 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm. Schools of course now do self evaluation all the time, but what would the self evaluation for your governing body look like? I’d hope the full governing body had a hand in drafting the sections of the SEF that deal with governance, but ben if they did how would your gb respond to the following questions? 1) Do all governors have a clear and accurate view of the school’s strengths and weaknesses? April | 2010 | Supergovernor

https://supergovernor.wordpress.com/2010/04

Archive for April, 2010. SATs Boycott – What Now? So, as you no doubt now know, the NAHT and the NUT have voted to boycott the administration of Key Stage 2 SATs this year. The NGA have come out to say they are disappointed. So is Ed Balls. His response. To governors is that they should suspend headteachers for the day of SATs if their headteacher is not willing to carry them out, and carry out their ‘statutory responsibility’ to ensure the tests go ahead. So what to do? Hopefully the NGA may provide mor...

What Are You Doing to Improve Teacher Quality? | Supergovernor

https://supergovernor.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/what-are-you-doing-to-improve-teacher-quality

What Are You Doing to Improve Teacher Quality? September 15, 2010 at 2:00 pm. Academies, free schools, fancy ICT – education’s not short of ‘magic bullets’ that are designed to increase the performance of schools. But study after study has come up with the rather more prosaic (and obvious) conclusion that the most important factor in improving pupil progress is great teachers. So what are you as a governing body doing to make sure you’ve got the very best teachers? Entry filed under: Uncategorized. Leave...

Archive for August, 2010. 10 Ways You Can Negotiate Better Deals from Suppliers. Does Best Value really just mean getting 3 quotes and picking the cheapest/best? I’m reading a really interesting book at the moment called Secrets of Power Negotiating. And it’s been making me think how useful negotiating skills could be as part of a school’s efforts to get better value for money. Get the other side to commit first. Ask for more than you expect to get. Flinch (visibly) at proposals. Play good cop / bad cop.

How 80% of your Budget Could Go Further. September 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm. The largest single item in any school’s budget is staffing. Maybe as much as 80%. A blog (mostly) about the issues arising from my involvement as a school governor. Thursday, 4 April 2013. In an earlier pos. T, I vented a bit about the relevance of performance related pay for teachers. Well, I recently watched a short (10:48) RSA Animate video. However, what really does. Motivate are three things: Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. So how do we become motivated? Pink outlines three critical ideas:. In that we either believe we can get better or we don’t. Welcome to GoverningWithCode.org. Our research seeks to better understand how code regulates. The idea that architecture or code can influence behavior is widely recognized, most prominently in Lessig's work. For example, the design of cookies affects online privacy, or how the design of digital rights management technologies affects intellectual property rights. Our work seeks to develop a systematic account of how code regulates in three areas. Our research is divided into three areas. How to shape code.
