Grampian Ringing Group: Leucistic Oystercatcher chick
http://grampianringing.blogspot.com/2015/07/leucistic-oystercatcher-chick.html
The website and blog of the Grampian Ringing Group. Thursday, 2 July 2015. On Friday 27 June Brian Pirie and I went to Hazlehead Academy to investigate a report of a possible albino oystercatcher chick. When we got there we found the bird was leucistic. Leucism affects the plumage of birds as they lack the pigment cells which are responsible for melanin production. Fawn colour on the normally black parts with a blue-grey eye. We would be pleased to have any sightings of this bird. 2 January 2016 at 06:45.

This bird was ringed last winter between September 2012 and April 2013. And is our first record of a Twite to Ireland. Joseph tells me they do have breeding Twite there, so some of our winter flock may come from there as well.

Thursday, 16 August 2012. Flick Me A Swift! In June, whilst out checking on a few nests around the local cemetery, we noticed some Swifts flying particularly low amongst the gravestones. We decided to take the opportunity to try some flick netting so jumping in the car we whizzed back to the house, picked up the gear and hurried back before the Swifts started flying high again. These little high flying wonders have such extremely sharp claws it’s unreal and very painful! Lesson learned I think! Back in J...

I managed to catch 16 controls between March and May last year and as you can see from the map below they came from all over the UK. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
