Friday, May 25, 2012. Spring is a season of surprises. Two days ago it was blue skies and sunshine and today we have had clouds, fog, and snow all day. We woke up at 5:00 AM to the dogs barking and two inches of snow on the deck. As long as I was up I decided to take a quick tour of the park. It was absolutely beautiful. Thursday, May 10, 2012. Getting back to some of our beautiful wildflowers again, today we feature the columbine. The columbine is our state flower and is wide spread in Grand County. The most common variety is the blue and white version with a yellow center. There are other varieties, like the golden columbine, but they are more rare. Walking down. Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Trail Ridge Road Opens. Trail ridge road opened yesterday. This is the second earliest open in the history of the road. The route connects Grand Lake, the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, and Estes Park, the eastern entrance to the park. There are great views along this very high route – over 12,000 feet at its high point. Today’s images were all taken yesterday along Trail Ridge Road. Marmots Playing By The Roadside. Saturday, May 12, 2012. I’m not exactly sure what today’s wild flower is. I took this picture quite a few years ago and at the time I thought it was arnica. The flowers always seem to grow on tall stems and in groups of three. These blooms were growing at an altitude of about 11,000 feet in a wet meadow. Saturday, May 19, 2012. The Mariposa Lilly is widely distributed in the area. It grows in the drier parts of meadows from corms so that once y0u find some you are almost guaranteed that it will be in the same spot the following year.
