Jill in Tanzania 2011. November 05, 2011. The Class of 2012. Unfortunately, St Judes never has enough places for all the children who would like to study here. From September to November each year there is a process in place to ensure that the most deserving children receive the places there are in Class One for the following year. There is no discrimination on the basis of race, tribe, religion or physical disability. One by one they are interviewed and given a series of matching and sequencing tasks.

http://jillintanzania2011.blogspot.com/2011/10/st-judes-day-2011.html
Jill in Tanzania 2011. October 29, 2011. St Jude's Day 2011. Friday October 28th was St Jude's Day and the school celebrated in style. Around 2,000 students, staff, volunteers and visitors came together to thank God for this school and the changes it has brought and will bring to so many lives. The day began with a mass with the school choir in full gospel mode. After lunch (yes they somehow managed to feed all those people! There was a concert on the magnificently decorated lower primary stage. All staf...

Jill in Tanzania 2011. October 29, 2011. Today, Saturday October 29th Laura and Helen invited me to come along with them to the Snake Park.Well, not just them, they were taking Razia (Laura's sponsored student) and Alex (Helen's step-mother's sponsored student for the day). I was very pleased to come along. It was about a half hour drive out of town and this included going past the airport (which Razia was seeing for the first time) and a Maasai boma. So what could be the final delight? Try to guess befo...

Jill in Tanzania 2011. June 30, 2011. Back To Basics - Shopping. Even though the school provides most of our needs we still need to buy breakfast goods, snacks, and importantly, toilet paper. The currency is the Tanzanian shilling. There are about 1,500 shillings to the Australian dollar. Here are Laura, Cindy and Barb with the "veggie mumas" - the preferred stop for fruit and veggies in Arusha. Markets also sell a large range of products that you may or may not want. June 28, 2011. Jill in Tanzania 2011. July 26, 2011. The End of Term Approaches. Sadly, the end of term is approaching. Believe it or not, whilst seeing and doing all these amazing things I have been working five days a week. It is a luxury to live on campus and not have to battle traffic to get to work or run for the bus. Once a week I have a class with the administration staff and another with the boarding teachers - 14 one hour periods in total. Some of the secondary teaching staff. As the end of my time approaches ...

Jill in Tanzania 2011. August 25, 2011. A Tourist in Arusha. Leaving St Judes was difficult. I have made so many good friends there and on my last day they surprised me with gifts and a special party put on by the office team - Mary, Grace, MJ, Elizabeth and Marietta. I felt very loved and appreciated and so sad to be going. In the evening Helen prepared a special "hello and goodbye" meal for Steven and another guest of Ian and Mary's from Holland. Then I had one day to be a tourist in Arusha. I can't wa...

Jill in Tanzania 2011: Second Hand Clothes
http://jillintanzania2011.blogspot.com/2011/11/second-hand-clothes.html
Jill in Tanzania 2011. November 05, 2011. Buying and selling second hand clothes is a very big part of life here. Many of the clothes are surplus from those that have been donated to charity in Europe. Vendors buy from the importers and sell in two markets here in Arusha. One is in the open air where sellers have their goods on the back of carts and the other is in a series of covered sheds. You just dig through the piles to see if you can find anything you like.
