Great and Little Orme Birding: April 2012

http://greatormebirds.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Great and Little Orme Birding. Birds and Wildlife blog of the Great Orme Country Park and Little Orme LNR, Conwy. Tuesday, 3 April 2012. Short eared Owl hots up cold windy morning. Sunday, 1 April 2012. Red and Yellow fever - it's no April fool! The first of the year and a good one to get for the Orme year list. 25 Magpies and 40 Woodpigeon were also on the move. This fine male Lesser Redpoll was in the gorse at the North End. Highlight of the day - a singing male Yellowhammer on the limestone wall!

Great and Little Orme Birding. Birds and Wildlife blog of the Great Orme Country Park and Little Orme LNR, Conwy. Tuesday, 11 June 2013. Late Spring finally delivers! Subalpine Warbler - June 8th, 2013. A Goodie at last! Pete arrived and after a short wait, the bird performed well and a few pics were obtained. Rob Sandham then jogged up the path and the bird showed well to the four of us present. This is the first record for the Great Orme, and the third for the county of Conwy. The other two were in...

Great and Little Orme Birding: Little Orme Footit January

Great and Little Orme Birding. Birds and Wildlife blog of the Great Orme Country Park and Little Orme LNR, Conwy. Wednesday, 13 February 2013. Little Orme Footit January. The Great Orme will have a lot to live up to this year. Seals have also been a big part of January and early February with up to 23 Atlantic Grey Seals in Angel Bay at low tide including some gorgeous pups. A Common Seal was also seen by Jonathen Harty in the bay at Penrhyn Bay this week. The local Peregrines are having a field day with...

Great and Little Orme Birding. Birds and Wildlife blog of the Great Orme Country Park and Little Orme LNR, Conwy. Monday, 21 May 2012. Going Cuckoo for a Courser! Saturday, 19 May 2012. Bleak morning brightened up by Short eared Owl. Thursday, 17 May 2012. Sunday, 13 May 2012. Mealy Mêlée - Redpolls everywhere today. A nice small Lesser Redpoll - a typical Welsh breeding bird. A large pale Redpoll - presumably a Mealy - it's rump and back had a lot of white. Two Redpolls seen very early on. For a sta...

Joe Wynn Photography: February 2013

http://manchesterbirder.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Monday, 4 February 2013. Down and Out in Manchester and Rhyl. That low, early morning winter sun really helps here. But its not all Buntings on the seeded patch, this Meadow Pipit has grown bold with the extensive disturbance and as a result has become quite tame. Even down to eye-level. And that bit of luck required to get something more special. But soon the bunts were back and my attention drawn away from this unobtrusive LBJ. A stunning male struts his stuff. This one appears to be trying to hide!

Joe Wynn Photography: Scilly Birding

http://manchesterbirder.blogspot.com/2014/09/scilly-birding.html

Tuesday, 30 September 2014. Further off, but with better light. And a few Snipe. On the tip off of a local, I decided to catch Joe Pender's Sapphire Pelagic out that evening, even though it'd be very late in the season for anything and there was rain forecast. Good call as it turned out. I stopped on Hugh Town beach for some Turnstones. Looking at the people on the quayside above. And this surprisingly pale Gannet. As dark drew near we saw more stormies and shearwaters, and Joe caught 3 blue sharks. ...

Friday, 19 July 2013. My blog, my blog, why have you forsaken me? Of late i've been something of a vagrant, i've wandered over Manchestor and the UK generally in search of, well, nothing really. But spent a belting three days up in Scotland, the details of which I will regail the discerning reader with in due time, but for now some pure, unadulterated action from my most favourite inshore small island in Sutherland: Handa! So imagine a really sunnny coupl'a days (hard isn't it? But what Handa is renowned...

Tuesday, 16 April 2013. The Mountains Afar', Mull 2013- Part I. Lord Byron once wrote of Scotland that. England thy beauties are tame and domestic. To one who has roved on the mountains afar'. But in the evenings I noticed some behaviour i'd never seen before in Divers, rafting. This is when many birds gather together in a huddle on the sea. But Divers are nearly always singletons, or at best are found in small groups. Therefore the sight of 27 one evening was something of a surprise. But then you're off...

Thursday, 26 September 2013. Transportation (Or 'Nice Pecs'). One of the things I find odd (and I suspect everyone else finds acutely annoying) about photography is the way I can completely ignore the passage of time. Lunchtime? Time to catch the train home? No idea. It all passes me by. Which is fantastic in a way, I can think of very few things that can so totally absorb you as photography. Picking towards me indirectly, you could acutally see its footprints in the soft mud. Sunday, 1 September 2013.

Joe Wynn Photography: January 2013

http://manchesterbirder.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, 20 January 2013. Oh the world of exams has not been kind to me of late, though the world of photography has been. As someone with eyes will have noticed my blog has been filled with Waxwings since November time and i've photographed little else since. It has therefore been surprising how few birds have hit my native Manchester, I have had to get out of town most of the time for my Waxie fix. And one down for a berry. In the sun at last. So all in all not a bad few weekend's work!

http://manchesterbirder.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 30 December 2013. 2013- The Year In As Many Characters or Fewer. So back to January. I had a busy January, a month of dissapointing precipitation punctuated by dissapointingly aversge AS exams and appropriately virolent norovirus. Still, every cloud an' all and there was more than a little hangover of last year's Waxwing hordes, all over Greater Manchester. It'd be rude not to, wouldn't it? April decided the revision machine had cut in prematurely, so the focus was shifted to the Isle of Mull, an...

Joe Wynn Photography: August 2014

http://manchesterbirder.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, 16 August 2014. But before long the outlying birds reached my position, prone as I was on the muddied sands of the estuary edge. The first to arrive are nearly always the Ringed Plovers, who neatly separate them off from the flock as a whole and feed on the peripheral edge closest to the shore. As if it wasn't Autumnal enough, the big clouds of rain that pressed ominously down opened and drenched me and the birds. The wind also blew loose sands at the birds (and into my lens! As mentioned previ...

Saturday, 30 June 2012. Shetland 2012- Day I: Seventh Heaven. There are 3 things you think as you land at Sumburgh, Shetland:. 1) S* * is that the runway sticking out into the sea? 2) Is that really that safe? 3) Hey, isn't that a Bonxie over there? But after stocking up at Tesco we headed down to the beach for some lunch, for me a Mackrel sandwich and a Scone. Alas, lunch was cut shot by the arrival of an Arctic Tern, a bird on The List and so it needed its portrait taken. But with the Skua definitely n...
