Green Hand Initiative: Protecting Higher-Order Values from the Profanity of the Market
http://greenhandinitiative.blogspot.com/2013/07/protecting-higher-order-values-from.html
Monday, July 8, 2013. Protecting Higher-Order Values from the Profanity of the Market. A friend recently brought to my attention on online article about the destruction of a pre-Inca pyramid in Peru by land developers:. I once looked up the etymology of the word "profane." I found that the word is derived from the Latin words for "before" (pro). And "temple" ( fanus). So, that which is profane is that which is not allowed into the temple, is kept outside of it, and is unworthy to enter. Last year http:/ ...

Green Hand Initiative: If This Didn't Seem Impossible, It Probably Wouldn't be Necessary
http://greenhandinitiative.blogspot.com/2014/04/if-this-didnt-seem-impossible-it.html
Friday, April 25, 2014. If This Didn't Seem Impossible, It Probably Wouldn't be Necessary. A seed potato in a planting hole, April 2014. When I first started the Green Hand website and blog at the suggestion of my friend Ken and the help of my technologically astute daughter, it was intended to be a solutions-focused affair, a celebration of the possibilities of sharing and human ingenuity, promoting the Green Hand sign concept as a vehicle for community building. Is it really that simple? Do I honestly ...

Green Hand Initiative: March 2012

Saturday, March 10, 2012. The Cultural Renaissance of Free Gooseberries and Outlaw Dandelions. I love giving plants away, and I hold that the sharing of vegetative abundance is the foundation of a sustainable culture. Every time seeds, cuttings, runners, crowns or rootlets change hands among friends and community members, powerful things can happen. Friendships can take on an expansive quality and a touch of immortality when we share our plants. This is why freely giving plants just as they freely give o...

Green Hand Initiative: November 2014
http://greenhandinitiative.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 14, 2014. Ironically, our efficiency came at the cost of our normal productivity. The people pushing were in effect temporarily unemployed, and could not get to their fossil-fuel-enhanced, highly productive jobs. The distinction between efficiency and productivity is probably worth a quick mention here. Let’s use the example of a bicycle as a piece of technology. A bicycle is highly efficient in terms of energy required to move a person and a small load in many kinds of common conditions.

Green Hand Initiative: April 2015

Thursday, April 16, 2015. Tossing and Turning: Our Disturbed Soils and Troubled Sleep. I’m sitting under a halogen light right now and staying up late to write about soil. That probably doesn’t sound ironic to you. I think it should. At some point, people discovered that they could get a temporary boost in productivity from the soil by inverting it, exposing its dreams to the light. As the plow inverts the earth, a vast and largely invisible conflagration ensues within the soil, a plume of CO. Tossing an...

Green Hand Initiative: Zombie Cannibalism: Why We Should Be Concerned if there’s a Business Case for Eating People
http://greenhandinitiative.blogspot.com/2013/10/zombie-cannibalism-why-we-should-be.html
Thursday, October 24, 2013. Zombie Cannibalism: Why We Should Be Concerned if there’s a Business Case for Eating People. Green Hand Blog, 2013 Halloween Edition. What if, I speculated as my stomach churned, the on-the-bone lamb that had been labeled for purchase as originating at a ranch somewhere actually originated, say, in China? And what if it were not lamb at all, but the natural byproduct of policy of a large Chinese factory complex. A policy called, without any special attempt at irony, the. Now, ...

Green Hand Initiative: September 2012

Thursday, September 20, 2012. Fairy House - builder unknown. Macworth Island, Maine. I was first introduced to fairy houses in the Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then encountered them again while sightseeing in Maine on Mackworth Island. Bark, sticks, stones, leaves, pine needles and (in Maine) shells were the construction materials. A little online searching will reveal it’s a growing phenomenon. Fairy houses are big! They’re cute little houses, and lovingly made. And, they’re free. Find ...

Green Hand Initiative: The Inner Path of Permaculture
http://greenhandinitiative.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-inner-path-of-permaculture.html
Monday, July 14, 2014. The Inner Path of Permaculture. Noticing way the tilt of the earth affects the inclinations of my mind and body brought me to a number of thoughts about permaculture as a personal journey. I am reminded of a few years ago when I read Sam Keen’s book, A Passionate Life. Setting aside for a moment the obvious error evident in the quote above — did the Greeks leave women out of a discussion about eros? But we see where that takes us, right? The importance of this axis is obliquely hin...

Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Feelings, Art, and the Making of Movements. I recently had the privilege of seeing performances by Lucas DiGia and Walter “Soul” Lacy at the HomeGrown Local Food Summit in Washtenaw County, Michigan. Lucas brought a powerfully articulated vision of the relationship of food, culture, and society to his raps—spiced with a bit of wry humor. Walter left me stunned with his spoken word poetry and thoughtful commentary themed on social justice and redemption. As shoppers we see a can ...
