"We do it the Hard Way": Picture books on Kindle
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2011/01/picture-books-on-kindle.html
Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Picture books on Kindle. Kate and I just finished reading My Father's Dragon. Last night. I spotted it in the Kindle store. And it was only 99 cents, so I thought it would be fun to read together. We've read a couple of heavily-illustrated books on the Kindle. It's been interesting to see how it handles the pictures. I took some screen shots, in case anyone else is curious about this. Kate and I both enjoyed the story (we read it in three installments). It was fun to see ...

"We do it the Hard Way": Kindle(s) in the house
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2010/11/kindles-in-house.html
Monday, November 08, 2010. Kindle(s) in the house. A few months ago I started thinking that I might want a Kindle. This was kind of a surprise, as I had never really considered it before. When we went to Idaho in July I bought an audiobook ( The Tale of Desperaux. My friend Jeanette (in our ward book club) has a Kindle and loves it. I think the thing that really sparked my interest was when I read that the new model would support Korean. A couple of other factors also pushed me in that direction:. Forums...

"We do it the Hard Way": Time Capsule (High School Art)
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2011/11/time-capsule.html
Monday, November 28, 2011. Time Capsule (High School Art). A couple of years ago, when we were cleaning out my parents' basement and taking pictures of stuff. I got some photos of some of my high school art projects. Since then I've been meaning to post these, and I figure now is as good time as any. Shoe still life in marker (as I recall, we had to do this without blocking it in in pencil first). Figure sketch (yes, this was the eighties). Study of hands and feet. Psychedelic vegetables (in pastels).

Roly-polies. Pillbugs. Sowbugs. Woodlice. Small terrestrial crustaceans. In Newfoundland they call them carpenters. Illustration by Kate. See the rolled-up one? Last week I took Kate and Andy out for a walk around the bike path. We put the pillbugs and their wood in a little tub we've had sitting on our back ...

"We do it the Hard Way": Typing Practice (한글로!)
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2010/05/typing-practice.html
Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Language packs in Windows. 한컴 타자연습 typing tutor. I have not tested this download- might have adware). I get a lot of hits from people looking for info on typing in Korean, so I thought I'd list those links at the beginning. Now, on to the post! It is a bit clunky, though, and it doesn't always work the first time. Especially if I'm writing quickly, sometimes it doesn't recognize what I'm trying to say, and then I have to clear it and start over, more neatly. Kim Sang Kyung, one of ...

"We do it the Hard Way": The Adventures of Mr. Penguin (a tale in Chinese characters)
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2007/12/adventures-of-mr-penguin-tale-in.html
Sunday, December 09, 2007. The Adventures of Mr. Penguin (a tale in Chinese characters). When I was first serving as a missionary in Korea, I lived in a high-rise apartment complex with an elevator. As I rode up and down in the elevator each day, staring at the information panel, I noticed one particular character. It seemed to draw my eye every time. I would stand there and look at it and think, "It's a penguin! Mister Penguin discovers the necessity of wearing his seatbelt. Mr Penguin is not tall enoug...

"We do it the Hard Way": Painting Fiona's Library
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2011/07/painting-fionas-library.html
Wednesday, July 27, 2011. This is what I've been working on for the past week and a half! I got a call from Helen Christensen, who I helped with the Mod Prom decorations. Asking if I'd like to do some set painting for the upcoming Broadway Revue at the church. We met JoLee and Patrick Watson at the church on Monday morning and went over the planned sets. Castle walls for Once Upon a Mattress. River City store fronts for The Music Man. Vaguely Middle-Eastern-looking buildings for Aladdin. The end of Day 2.

"We do it the Hard Way": Cream Pineapple Crochet Sweater
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2011/08/cream-pineapple-crochet-sweater.html
Saturday, August 27, 2011. Cream Pineapple Crochet Sweater. I got my sweater all blocked and dry in time to enter it in the fair! I took it down to Puyallup today, along with Kate's little yellow sweater. It's kind of fun to drive onto the fairgrounds while they're getting things set up. And the ladies at the Home Arts section are always so nice. I took Andy along with me and he got to flirt with everybody. The pattern is from Let's Knit #16 (one of the Japanese books. Bit too big. But it'll work. My hus...

"We do it the Hard Way": Eyes on Dr. Seuss
http://wedoitthehardway.blogspot.com/2011/03/eyes-on-dr-seuss.html
Wednesday, March 02, 2011. Eyes on Dr. Seuss. It's Dr. Seuss's birthday! Kate had a special assembly at school today, and she said their principal dressed up as the Cat in the Hat. Dr Seuss's whimsical artwork is certainly distinctive and probably instantly recognizable to just about everybody. There's one particular thing about his illustrations that I noticed a while back- how often he draws characters with their eyes closed. I first noticed this when reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

Saturday, November 07, 2009. It's National Digital Scrapbook Day! Or International. One of those.). To celebrate, I'm sharing some polka-dot patterns that I made recently. Click here to download. This is a PAT file for Photoshop, with four different patterns in it. If you unzip the folder and then drag the PAT file into Photoshop, it should load automatically. (The icon looks like this:). And here are some fun things that you can do with patterns! You can paint with polka dots! Or try this: use a distres...
