The Olive Curve: August 2013

http://greenvalleyolive.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

My learning curve in producing fine olive oil in the fabled California gold fields. Sunday, August 11, 2013. I had another small disaster with the propagation table a few days ago, some small creature had plowed through several rows. Luckily whatever it was, it confined its digging to the mostly dead outer perimeter. It did expose this cutting however, and I was thrilled to see these fine roots. How cool is that? Labels: Its always something. Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Check those irrigation lines!

The Olive Curve: Green House for Propagation

http://greenvalleyolive.blogspot.com/2014/06/green-house-for-propagation.html

My learning curve in producing fine olive oil in the fabled California gold fields. Friday, June 20, 2014. Green House for Propagation. Finishing up a simple 10x12 gambrel roofed greenhouse based off one built by the prodigious DIY'er Ana White. It's a simple building I framed with recycled 2x6 redwood deck boards, an old 2x8 bookshelf, and some some old metal corrugated roofing. The only new items are the clear corrugated panels from the local Home Depot. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tractorpunk: Fall and All That

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016/10/fall-and-all-that.html

Shut Up And Farm. Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Fall and All That. Around this time of year little weekly and freebie papers (as in newspapers, remember them? That usually focus on phone-sex ads and supermarket coupons give their beleaguered staffs a little freedom. These writers then run sentimental pieces about the season. Alliteration. Adjective strings. Really bad infusions of pseudo-Elizabethan English. Out, damned feel-wistful columns and a pox upon thee! Our campus flag flies at half-staff one day ...

Tractorpunk: Tree of "Heaven"

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2013/09/tree-of-heaven.html

Shut Up And Farm. Saturday, September 28, 2013. I'm not a native-species purist. I love my Japanese maples and, for that matter, the basil in our garden. But some intruders are simply intolerable. Chief among them these days is " Tree of Heaven. While a mature example is a pretty tree, it has many vices. For instance, Ailanthus. And you can't just have a little of Ailanthus. Here is my "after" picture of the little colony shown above. Yet here my organic practice bends; we have an invasive species out of...

Tractorpunk: No Till? I Think Not.

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016/07/no-till-i-think-not.html

Shut Up And Farm. Wednesday, July 13, 2016. I've been fascinated by small-scale successes with no-till gardening, such as lasagna gardening. But so far on our little farm, it is simply not working for commercial growing. I have 7000 square feet of raised beds now, and more on the way. In time, however, I will greatly reduce tillage. I cannot even fathom how my friend Dominic would manage 3 acres without tilling. He uses a cultivator on a row-crop tractor. Wire grass can be reduced or even killed by shade...

Tractorpunk: January 2017

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html

Shut Up And Farm. Saturday, January 7, 2017. Chickens in the Garden. Hah. We have had chickens for more than 18 months, currently a flock of 13 hens. Number 14 (I don't like naming them; my wife does) perished in the heat last summer, getting trapped in a raised bed garden and unable to escape the fencing. As we have discovered, those cute pictures on gardening books that feature chickens are comfortable lies. Photos like the one above (not our garden, not our chicken! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Tractorpunk: April 2016

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

Shut Up And Farm. Saturday, April 2, 2016. Old-School Tools: Fire and Fuel. Enter a Quadrajet four-barrel in my wife's '68 Chevy C-10. The truck gets driven about 1000 miles per year, but in winter it sits a lot. So when we took the truck out the other day on a mission to pick up some 93-octane non-ethanol fuel, the vehicle "stumbled" at high speed, surging as if the engine were being starved for fuel. Spoiler alert: I got it right the first time. I must credit Super Chevy's Web site. For those using old...

Tractorpunk: Intensity or Communion?

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016/12/intensity-or-communion.html

Shut Up And Farm. Monday, December 12, 2016. The search for intensity is the shadow side of the healer." One of my Yoga teachers, Nitya, said that, something she'd learned from one of her teachers. Now I share it here. So what in the Sam Hill does that principle of Yoga have to do with DIY country life? A lot, actually. Modern farming- to feed a nation of more than 300 million souls- does involve a great deal of intensity, not all of it sustainable. Yet food is the best healer I know. Virginia Farm to Ta...

Tractorpunk: October 2016

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html

Shut Up And Farm. Thursday, October 20, 2016. Best Home Canning Site, Ever. Canning is a science, even if recipes are an art. This time of year is the time to get the last canning done. To make a mistake may, at best, spoil the food. At worst? You kill someone or at least make them seriously ill. There are a few principles I follow, based upon my reading of the University of Georgia's amazing site, The National Center for Home Food Preservation. No matter how Granny canned, if the site I've listed says "...

Tractorpunk: July 2016

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

Shut Up And Farm. Wednesday, July 27, 2016. On The Country's Own Terms. I ran across an antique postcard (remember them? Today A couple has walked out of a country house and needs to visit “the Necessary.” That means crossing a moonlit yard to a little building labeled “this is it.” Just don’t drop that lantern and spill the oil. The Honeypot might go right up in flames. Once I refused to kill a Copperhead my late father-in-law turned up when he moved a fallen branch way back in the woods, where part of ...

Tractorpunk: The Perfect Farm Truck?

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-perfect-farm-truck.html

Shut Up And Farm. Friday, January 11, 2013. The Perfect Farm Truck? Audrey and Michael Levatino’s book The Joy of Hobby Farming. Provides a list of essential gear for the would-be rural homesteader. I think "hammer" and "tape measure" are on there, forged from the author's experience at Ted's Last Stand. Farm, up the road from us in Gordonsville. It was pleasing, in a culture that often makes a fetish of the pickup truck, to see the vehicle in the book as just another essential tool. Larger contractor or...

Tractorpunk: September 2016

http://tractorpunk.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Shut Up And Farm. Sunday, September 18, 2016. Heritage Harvest Festival, 2016: Good Lessons for a Tractorpunk. Two years ago, I waxed poetic. About this annual event at Monticello. This marked the 10th anniversary, and I think we have only missed it one time. I have to credit the speakers I have met there with so much of what we put into practice here at Beepasture Farms. The weather was hot, unseasonably so as much of 2016 has been, and attendance seemed a little low as compared to last year. My 2016 ch...
